Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Xbox
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic or KOTOR as it called by many players, is one the better Star Wars games to come out over the last few years. For Xbox owners, it is a great RPG.
Yes, you read that right, RPG. If you have seen the ads, you might think it is an action fighting game, but it is an RPG. KOTOR uses a non-turn based RPG battle system. It may take some getting use to working with it, but for 99% of the RPG fans, it will be easy to use. For action fighting fans, it may take a while to get really good with this system. Graphics is what gets the attention of most people when it comes to games. KOTOR offers good game play graphics and really nice FMV (Full Motion Videos). The camera is fine, you really have issue seeing what you are doing. When people compare RPGs, they look for the depth or length of the game, storyline, and ease of use. I am 30 hours into my game and it looks like I have another 15-20 hours to go before I will finish KOTOR. I would say the is good by RPG standards. The storyline is classic Star Wars with more substance then the usual Star Wars movie storyline. I found the interface to be easy to work with. One nice feature is the "public transport" system. You can switch party members or get back to your main base with a couple clicks of a button, versus the usual five minutes of running around. You can save at anytime and there is an option for auto saving. Since this is on the Xbox, there is hundreds of save blocks, but you cannot save to a memory card. One of my favorite features is the instant catch up level up feature. When you add members to your party, their level is brought up to match yours. As RPG players know, it is a pain in the azz to add low level members to your group. This often requires an hour or more of doing simple fights to give the new members enough experience to be able to fight along the rest of your group. I hope other game publishers take a que from what BioWare has done here. My game did crash twice and there are some minor buggy moments. There are a few small mini games in KOTOR. Swoop racing is the biggest of mini games. It is a simple racing game that is kind like F-Zero and drag racing combined. There is a simple card game like 21 or Blackjack. You also get to shoot down enemy fighters from the back of your escaping space ship. BOTTOM LINE, Star Wars KOTOR will make most RPG fans very happy. Star Wars fans should find this game a pleasure. If action games are your thing and Sci-Fi is not, then you may just skip this one. If a player pays the usual $40-$50 retail, I think they will be happy. If you find this game for $25 or less it is worth grabbing for most gamers. Games like this are helping give Xbox an edge. I own all three current generation systems. There are some PS2 junkies who claim the Xbox lacks titles, but that argument is not holding up as well these days. If you do not own a Xbox, it is worth looking into. Nothing against the PS2, but for the next couple of years it looks like the Xbox will be the system to own. Thankfully there is an adapter to allow players to the PS2 gamepad on the Xbox.

Star Wars KOTOR is to much for the PS2 to handle. I am sure they could release a stripped down version with weaker graphics, but the GC and PS2 could not match the Xbox if they ever got a version fo this game. Before this thread gets way off topic, I will save anymore opinions on Xbox vs GC vs PS2 for the other threads on this topic. Anther quick note for anyone playing Star Wras KOTOR, don't be surprised if your group gets it butt kicked by an enemy, you reload and face that same enemy with the same group, and you kick butt. I fought a group three times and got slammed everytime. I tired a fourth time and won with ease. I did not have different members in my group or new weapons or anything different. I just kept trying. |

Final game time, 58 hours 17 minutes. Any game that gets more then 50 hours of play time is a winner in my book. Beyond the criticisms I have already posted, I am disappointed that the story line has nothing original in it. It follows the Star Wars tradition of taking story lines from others and mixing them up to create the plots. This is not an awful thing, it beats the heck out of games that use generic storylines or have plots that make no sense.
Another minor issue is that there are only a dozen different faces used on the many characters. It is weird to see the same face on many characters. Again, that is a very minor issue. X-box owners should consider adding KOTOR to their game library. |

Yea, KOTOR is a hella tight game. I got it a week ago and I'm playing like 6 hours a day. Hella addictive. Took me a hella long time getting outta Taris, now I'm on this wookie planet. Damn, im beginning to sound like a nerd. IMO, the graphics could be a bit better and there are some glitches here and there, but all in all, it's worth my 45 bucks!

"i am sorry to say that kotor is the worse star wars game ever!!!!!!!!!!"
I agree, you should explain what makes you say that. Most Star Wars Games are okay or they suck. KOTOR is one of the best Star Wars games ever. If you do not like RPGs then that would explian why you do not like this game. The way it was advertised people might have thought it was going to be an action fighting game. KOTOR is not a perfect game, but it is above average and by Lucas Arts stardards, it is far above average.

I have one question - Do u need to have jahuni in ur party in order to beat the game? the reason i asked this is because my bro's game got hella messed up after fighting malak for the first time. Like during the converstaion on the ebon hawk (u kno, when the black guy [i forget his name cuzz i rarely use him] and carth are talking), Carth finishes his line in teh conversation and the whole game just stops. I mean, it doesn't freeze or anything, it just stops rite there. I was wondering if the next line in the conversation would be jahuni's line. plz help!

Anytime a character is needed to finish a level or area, they make that character part of your party or they suddenly show up where you are at. I did not have the big hair ball in my party while on his planet, but he suddenly appeared in certain scenes. It just sounds like you hit a defect in the game. KOTOR does have a few program defects.

I know that this is an old thread, but this is the first time I have been in the gaming forum. I got the PC version of KOTOR for Christmas (2003) I played it and got to the elevator that takes you to the Underworld on Taris. When I got here I had the papers, showed them to the gaurd and got on the elevator. As it loads the next level, it just quits loading and takes me straight to the desktop, completely exits the game, doesn't go to the menu or anything. I have tried this over and over, it always does the same thing. Does anybody know what is wrong?

Re: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Xbox
How is your framerate while playing KOTOR? I've heard of framerate problems with KOTOR PC, maybe that leads to the crashes your having. That or a simple bug/glitch which you wuld need a patch to fix.
