2000 Silverado noises

I have a 2000 Silverado 4X4 Z71 with approx. 86k on it and it's making some very strange noises.

1. I have a clicking noise as I accelerate from a stop that sounds like someone tapping on a tube with a piece of metal. It goes away at about 30 mph or if I let off the gas.

2. I have the low speed steering noise I've been reading about, but it doesn't clunk, just sounds like 2 pieces of metal scraping against each other. Is this the ISS problem I've been reading about? If so, what is the best grease to use?

3. There is also a rattling sound that I get whenever I am driving in town and hit ANY bump, crack, dip or small pothole in the road. Any suggestions?? I love the truck and can't afford anything newer anyway so I would like to get these problems fixed. Thanks.

1. Can you tell where the clicking is coming from? Front/back? Left/right? Off hand it sounds like a worn CV joint, but you'll have to listen to find out which side it is on.

2. Dunno about that one.

3. I think you have a heat shield loose or broken exhaust hanger. Easy fix if you're handy with a welder.

2. ISS is heard when you take off or slam on the breaks. it is thud felt in the steering wheel and definitely coming from there. also, when you turn and hit depression in the road same time. but it is always DIRECTLY IN THE STEERING WHEEL, and can be felt in hands on it.
3. get under the truck and locate your driveshaft slip yoke. it is the one that goes into the transmission tail. grab it and shake vigorously. if that's the same clunck, welcome to my world. if not - lucky you. after that, there's a ton of places where it cab bang, rattle, click, scrape, and do other noises. called Clunckerado for a reason.
1. i'd check powertrain mounts.
spare tire is known clunck maker on those.

THE tapping noises may be the PCV ,,,exhaust manifold bolts broken, or the lifters...

the lifters on this engine will make noise if the oil is not changed on a regular basis and when hot...

also the use of a synthetic oil [I use mobil 1 5-30w with a purolator plus filter] will aid in keeping the engine running great...

the rattling noise may be the muffler baffles,,,,do you get the tin can pop when the engine is just warming ,,,this is quite common....

Pull the front wheels and see if you can spin the hubs freely. If they are tight or too hard to turn by hand the they are shot.

Clicking noise under acceration and goes away when letting off the gas sounds like the classic u-joint worn out syndrom. Look for rust around the caps and see if there is any play in them.

Other clunking noises are probably produced by the exhust system as mentioned before.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll let you know what I find when I check out the underside. No time today, but maybe tomorrow.

So how should U-joints last? I had them replaced about 3 yrs ago. I don't remember the sound it made then, but it could be the same. I don't tow or haul with it and only put about 10k a yr on the truck so it seems awful soon to be going through this again.

Yesterday, as I was going to work, I turned right and it made LOTS of noise for about 200 yds. Next I turned left and felt a clunk like something that had been bound up breaking loose. Today, no noise at all???? Hope it doesn't decide to take a dump on me.

I have had the lifter noise you described and can tell you that isn't it. Do you recommend Mobil 1 over Amsoil? I've been researching which is the best synthetic and haven't made up my mind yet. Any insight would be helpful.

i really can't find a better info. judge for yourself. from my PERSONAL experience, M1 is no match to Amsoil or Royal Purple

ok, this morning i have found something so soothing, that i am still enlightened.
been driving with very annoying clunk from the rear for over a year. did multiple attempts to locate the culprit, all unsuccessful.
finally, blamed it on loose output shaft bearing in trannie.
well, after another failed attempt to break that god damn transmission pan plug, which even griptite couldn't, i gave up and just started messing around undercarriage as truck was up on the ramps.
well, i was tapping and banging on this and that. finally, i got to leaf springs. yanked what ever i could yank, nothing moves. then, just out of curiosity, i smacked 2nd from the bottom leaf in the leaf spring, straight up. BANG! again - bang!
those have plastic inserts on the tips. for whatever reason, pass side only, both of them compressed to the point that leaf will bang on the leaf above it just from the fist smack.
lazy as i am, i simply shimmed leaves. drove for good 45 miles after

unless i hit a major pothole, and the whole truck goes boynk, that noise is gone. even then, it's not that clunck, just seat rattles, dashboard rattles, the usual "quality".:sarcasm1:

on that tranny plug with the pan removed from the tranny heat the plug until it starts to glow red,,,,small propane torch....then with the pan secured so it will not rotate using a 6 pt socket 1/2 in drive unscrew....gradually increase the torque ...as the plug starts to shrink the LOCTITE will break loose...the azz holes did use loctite ...

it is very easy when you can drain 3.5 qts out before this pan is removed....

I have never had the leaf springs make noises ,,the dealer told me years ago about some plastic that stops this noise I believe your talking about..

mobil 1 is a good synthetic and I have had no problems for 110,000mi....I know of others that used amsoil and have also used mobil1,,,the difference is nil....every one of these vehicles never had any engine damage, or wear...

to check the cv joints lift wheels off the ground and rotate the shafts and push/pull up and down for play..if the cv joints where replaced have you been greasing them...

parking the vehicle over damp soil for long periods with no use can cause these cv joints to rust up...

J, before you say it's easy, come over and try to remove the damn pan from 2000 silvie. i tried. and you know me long enough to have it figured that i can do thing or two around cars.
mofos did not make it easy on that pan removal. so yes, probably next week, i'll do it again. no sweat, i had fluids drained off the tilted pan edge on several cars, as some simply don't even have drain plug.
BUT NOW I KNOW TO BEND THAT BRACKET THAT HOLDS PAN IN PLACE.
once i get pan off, getting plug out will not be a problem. i'll just drill sucker out. i AM NOT intending to reuse it, as it is made out of some cheapass metal that stripped completely. six point socket? Griptite? nothing works. so, i'll simply replace it with oil pan plug.
every time i am coming back to this drain plug, i just have that vision of them GM boys betting on who will come with a cheaper material choice and dummer design. wdf they had to put that depression into that plug?

J, as of oils..... buddy, there's BIG difference between oil that goes tar black in 3-4 000 miles, and oil that goes carmel in 12 000. so, thanks, but no, thanks. no M1 on my book.

try the torch and it will come off.....have the socket in cold water then unscrew it ...if its rounded , file the sides so that a smaller 6 point fits...like i said they used loctite....

before I remove the pan i use a 1/4 in ratchet with a torx bit to loosen those badazz linkage screws...the first time i did this i removed these coated the threads with anti seize,,,so the are in not the hard anymore..

on this oil//// my oil was never black, if it ever was i would be very pissed off..
changing at 8,ooomi I have still a hard time determining the oil level..as it is still clean after many thousands of miles...when changing the oil it is slightly darker than new....and i use 1/3qt ofoil over the 8,000mi...

when i drive on the hyway i go at 70-80 mph....and put the pedal to the metal when necessary ....it still roars like new....

What's your recommendation for synthetic?

I'll check the leaf springs to see if they're sans plastic. Haven't had a chance to check the u-joints yet as I have been sick. Ever since last week when it sounded like something broke loose, I have had NO noise from the drivetrain. I'll update again in a couple of days.
