sequential or automatic with paddles
im looking into getting one of the new mr-s's and im trying to decide between the 5 speed h pattern or the 6 speed sequential. im trying to find out if the six speed is acually sequential or if it is another one of those tiptronic type things that is actually an auto that you just tell when to shift.
any help would be appreciated, thanks |

Re: sequential or automatic with paddles
The SMT is 6 speed and the manual is 5 pd. The SMT is not an automatic that you tell when to shift. It makes use of a manual transmission with the clutch and shifting done by computer controlled hydraulics. The throttle is throttle-by-wire so the computer will also match RPMs for you during shifting. There is no torque converter, and the car will never shift for you, ever. No automatic mode.
From the reviews I read, it downshifts with the best heel-toers, but upshifting takes an eternity, relatively. |

![]() i really want to get a hardtop and then in five years after i finish paying for it put in a different engine i love the way it drives and tonight it rained and i got all sideways around some corners and it was so much fun. im probably going to crash and kill myself |

Re: sequential or automatic with paddles
yeah i checked japan parts and thats looking kinda pricy as i am now $15,000 in debt and i think the things im gonna get in order are: flywheel (i love the acceleration but i think the response when rev matching needs to be a little swifter), lsd (cause i like to spin both tires), clutch (cause i liek to spin both tires through a couple of gears), then suspension even though the ride is the stiffest ive driven. sometime during all of this ill do the usual intake and exhaust. eventually i want the hardtop but all that other stuff is gonna cost me. i would turbocharge it but its an open deck motor and it has vvtli so maybe after i pay it off and the warranty is up ill do a motor swap. i saw in turbo magazine they basicaly bolted in a camry motor (5mfe?) and then put on a roots blower and a t-78 turbo or something rediculous. that was in a MK2.

Re: sequential or automatic with paddles
mmmm... but didn't you have a MKIII????
the MKII or SW20 is a bigger car and came with bigger engines. one of which it shares with the camry. the MKIII has actually gone back to using the MKII turbo engine for JGTC, but it's mounted longditudally with a different transaxle from memory. you might be able to fit it in transversely but i doubt it. Sounds like you have a while to work out what you want to do with the engine anyway.

Re: sequential or automatic with paddles
oh wow i kinda just figured the mounts and tranny bolt locations were pretty much the same. oh well i do have a long time before i even consider taking that motor out.
i dont suppose there is anyone who has put a 2jz-gte in a mk3 |

Re: sequential or automatic with paddles
now you're dreaming... the 2JZ is two cylinders longer than the 3SG. the cylinders are the same size, so its an extra half engine... even if you could fit it in it'd SCREW your nice handling car.
PERHAPS you could fit one of the IS-200 2 litre 6 cyl engines in? i've seen one in a FWD corolla in place of a 4AGE, which is about the right size.... if you REALLY want a challenge...

Re: sequential or automatic with paddles
If you want an engine swap, get either a 3S-GTE if you want a turbo, or a 2ZZGE if you're gonna stay N/A
