1985 300zx?

What Kind of things can I do to the VG30 to make it have some good power, and if nothing can be done how would the RB Series do in this car??

Re: 1985 300zx?

VG30E or VG30ET? There is a substantial amount of mods for both... as for an RB... the RB20DE(T) came stock in some Z31's and should bolt in directly. I'm sure other RB engines will fit with some fabrication, but I say stick it out with an RB20 since they are less popular and less likey to cost too much $$$. Now the hard part is sourcing a good engine.

Re: 1985 300zx?

*raises eyebrow* don't give me any idea's 1via...
as for mods, if you've got the n/a, you can go with a cone filter, new full exhaust, new headders... nitrus... other than that you've prettymuch hit the roof when it comes to mods until you start tearing down the vg and rebuilding it with high compression pistons and such, but that's just ridiculous.. it'd cost way less just to go turbo
if it's a turbo, talk to llz

Re: 1985 300zx?

*looks around* hey hey now don't look at me.. it'd be sweet and all, but if i were doing any engine swapping it'd be on a 240z... super light, and quite sleeper like... pretty sweet if you ask me

Removing weight is free and for every 100lbs removed you gain 1/10 second in the 1/4. Lighter wheels and tires helps acceleration plus reduces sprung weight. Big killer sound system is a no-no. Mine weighed 225 lbs. .25 seconds slower. Not any more, wanna a nice setup cheap?
Now I have a nice clean system, total weight, 18lbs. Except for the wheels, its all free. Just remove anything you don't need and you'd be suprised how much shit you don't need. Port maching, free except for the gaskets, and a gain in HP. More air in front tires, less rolling resistance, free. Play with your timing, (only if you know what your doing) for max power, cost free. Most people over look the simple things and thats what makes winners and losers

Iv actualy got similar questions for the 86, Iv got to finish getting my engine just reliable... but...

Ok, The RB20DET, is that the turbo V6? Iv got the N/A, Is that just the RB20? But question, if so, does the turbo version of this engine already come with diffrent pistons, and other engine work done? Or are they both the same ready for turbo swap either way?

Iv been planning on getting headers, and doing some cooling system work to my engine, getting an E-fan, Underdrive pully, Custom Exaust, Intake, and Iv been trying to figure out If it would be good to do some ignition work. Iv heard you can get a throttlebody from a 240 to boost the HP on it, and do they make higher performance mafs?

Anyway, after thats done, Id like to either go Turbo or Supercharged. It depends on how well my engines running, If Its not too complex, and Iv got everything pretty well figured out in my mind for maintance and everything, Ill go turbo, If I just want to go really simple, Ill probably to super.

okay... the RB20DET DID NOT come in the US versions (please see 'RB Powered Z31's' thread'). They only came in the Z31 (200Z... last of the straight-six powered Z's) and a few other cars including Skylines in Japan. The engine is a Straight six... not V6. What you have in your car now is a VG30E... the Turbo'd engine is designated as VG30ET. These were also avaible in Japan with a few other engine options (damn the Japanese always get the best of both worlds!). It may cost a bit to actually find an RB20DET but it should bolt right up and would be totally bad-ass! I would not reccommend trying to Turbo or Supercharge your existing motor... if you are dead set on forced induction I would just buy a Turbo'd car. Actually swapping in a Turbo'd engine in place of your NA engine may cost as much as it would to buy a car with a turbo already! I'm not trying to burst your bubble here... BUT if you are dead-set... YES you can bolt in a VG30ET or a really cool and rare RB20DET!

oooohhhh!! I knew that engine code was familiar! lol. Ok, man... now Im wanting a skyline too! lol... I like my current engine, what Im asking about is if the engine components can handle a turbo on an N/A, cause Iv already got a Turbo and an intercooler, and Iv got a friend who does welding, and I can do custom exaust, I can pretty much do a custom turbo setup pretty cheap because Iv got hookups on any kind of labor I need, and most parts. The only thing Id be worried about getting, are the new ECU. Would it work to use the Turbo 300ZXs ECU? But I still wanna keep the setup on my 300 really simple, Im trying to make it a lasting Classic car.

But theres a Dude in Cali trying to get skylines shipped to the US right? And Iv heard if you wanna get one here right now, youll probably end up shelling out 80,000 for the car and shipping, and its driving on the right side, and Iv heard its dangerous to do a left hand drive conversion on the skyline.... anyway...
