Center Console Shifter question

Hey guys. My mechanic got done today replacing the tranny in my 71 Nova, but he said I need new linkage for the tranny(its a column shifter). For a long time I have been wanting to switch to a center console shifter. My question is this, If I buy a new center console shifter (like the complete kit) will it include all the linkage I will need? I dont want to by new linkage now, and switch to a center console shifter later and the linkage wont work anymore, and I also dont know if the complete kit will include all the things I need. Any info is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks
Rob

Its gonna be a pretty heavily built turbo 350. Im not totally sure, but I think the flew cable replaces al of the linkage rods on the tranny. I just need someone with more experience to say im right =).

Re: Center Console Shifter question

most aftermarket shifters include the linkage/cable parts you need to swap from a column shifter. I swapped from a column shifter to a B & M pro ratchet in my 70 Nova, and it had all the parts I needed.
If you wanted to use a factory-style floor shifter with a console, unless you can find a complete kit, all the parts have to be purchased separately, and some small items may not be available new.

The one end of the shift cable bolts into the shifter and there is a bracket you bolt on to the trans that holds the other end of the shift cable. When you shift, the cable pushes or pull directly on the shifter on the trans, there are no linkages to worry about. It's really pretty easy to install, the only thing you have to keep in mind is the shifter cable can't be bent at any hard angles. For my S10, the cable came out about towards the front of the trans, I had to loop it along the pass. side, up over the tail of the trans and down the driver side to the bracket. The only problem you could run into is the cable might not be long enough to loop it around the trans so worst case scenario, they sell longer shifter cables for this problem. I doubt you'd have to worry about it.
