1997 Jetta GT automatic; worth it?

I have the chance to buy one and they just changed the timing belts but did not change the water pump or transmission fluid and it has almost 79K miles on it. They say it runs perfect but you can hear a little ticking since they've changed the belts; I was wondering if anyone coudl tell me different possibilites of what could be wrong and if it would be worth getting into something like this? Could it just be the transmission fluid and water pump needs to be fixed? Could it just be a loose screw or a improperly set belt? I don't know all that much about cars but would appreciate anyone who could give me a few suggestions! Also are the transmissions on the automatics prone to die quickly? Feel free to post or e-mail me at [email protected] Thanks!
