NOS vs. Turbo

I had an interesting conversation today at work, although I didnt understand some parts of it..... a friend of mine was trying to convince me of going NOS over a turbo..... i plan to be drag racing in the summer in 80 F + heat.... now, his idea was to use NOS to beat all the turboed vehicles. I drive a 91CRX with B16a swap...his reason was that the turbo would give me power below my powerband, and then when i hit my powerband i'd get a flat spot, and also that 80F+ degree weather isnt optimal temp for a turbo, so they will lose power.... at least thats what i remember and understood of the conversation... does this sound right? His idea was to lighten and polish my crankshaft, lighten flywheel, valve job, port and polish the head, new lighter higher compression pistons, lighter stronger connecting rods, all to get my revs up a LOT faster, along with other mods to raise all motor HP to around 300, and then to shoot a 100 shot..... will it be the turbo killer he's making it out to be?

Go with the turbo. All NOS does is increase the chance to blow your motor. if you want to go with turbo, make sure you get a intercool er. The point of that is to cool the engine down for your 80 degree weather.

Why pick one, why not have both?

I just want to clarify that an intercooler is not like an extra radiator, it cools the charge of air from the turbo after it's compressed. When air is compressed to say... 14.8 PSI a byproduct of that compression is increased heat. The intercooler cools that compressed charge of air before it hits the intake manifold but does not flow any coolant or anything, just air.

Actually Nitrous doesn't do that. If you set up the car right you won't fry your engine. That's just a myth. The problem with Nitrous is that most people just slap it on and don't do anything else. You have to make sure that you are getting enough fuel to compensate the extra air that is coming in.

True, True. I was just considering the fact of the people who dont build up their motor and just slap on NOS.

Unless you are running mid 14s or better OFF the bottle, then N2O is just for bitches. If you need the bottle to break mid 14s, you're taking the easy way out, and your car is still slow off the bottle. It's the bitch way out....

Still no one has answered my question.... the engine will be set up right for NOS. I will make sure i get enough fuel runnin to the engine, and I plan to be running low 13's OFF the bottle.... will i beat turbo'ed cars running about the same?

It is impossible to say, "I will" or "will not beat turboed cars, with my Nitrous Oxide." If you are racing a car with the stock fuel system and just a street compressor with no intercooler... then you probably would beat them with your built engine and Nitrous. But that is not to say you will beat any turbo car. There still may be a lot of N/A cars that will beat you.

If it were me, I would go turbo. It is like Phatwippin' said, you are still slow... you just have a bottle too make you faster when it is engaged. The way I look at it is... Nitrous is like "Speed pills" some people take them to make them more on top of things for certain reasons, such as; to eccel in sports. Nitrous is just "speed" in a bottle.
