Any Idea how much a rebuilt tranny would be?

I have a 96 grand voyager SE.3.3 . The transmission just went on me. I have someone who could probably do the work for me, but I need to know about how much a rebuilt transmission will run me. thanks!

Chrysler will sell you a new transmission for $1436 plus tax for this vehicle. A reman. trans will cost less if you can find one. I had a transmission rebuilt for my T&C with a 3.3 and it cost me $1700 installed. Good Luck!

Thanks so much for the info... I am hoping I wont have to buy a new one, but it sure looks that way so far My father showed me how to do the code thing..turing the key on and off.. one of the codes was a 66. In the book it says :"No message received from Transmission Control Module". Do you think it may need a new control module? What is happening is that the van doesnt get out of first gear. It still goes in reverse though. Any ideas?
Sorry for all the ?'s but you seemed like you might know about these things... thanks again

Re: Any Idea how much a rebuilt tranny would be?

Chrysler transmissions are notorious for going bad after about 70k miles. If I am correct the transmission control module is located inside the transmission. It is possible that the module can be replaced and the transmission will work fine again. I would take the van to a shop and have them scan the computer again. They can do a more detailed scan and tell you exactly what is wrong. If the trans module is bad it will be a lot less to fix than replacing the entire transmission but you need to be sure that that is all that is wrong. Something made it go bad and you need to fix that too. Good Luck!

Re: Any Idea how much a rebuilt tranny would be?

i just went through this with my 94 GC (3.3) OD.

$1600.00 for a complete rebuild, including a replacemnt transmission core.. mine was completely destroyed. normal overhaul/rebuild cost at my local shop: $1250.00. labor and normal parts. Most smaller shops will scan your tranny for no cost at all. just call around to your local transmission shops.. some places will not charge, but only if they do the work to repair it afterwards. I think most places will charge $50.00 for the scan if not free.

Make sure you get warranty with the rebuild. I got a 12month warranty on mine. Also, the rebuild will include a torque converter most of the time.

If you need "hard" parts, gears, hubs, etc. your price goes up from there...

good luck.

Cap.

For my 99 Taurus, I bought a used (51k miles) tranny from salvage yard and have them put it in for a total cost of $800. They also gave me 60 day warranty. Drives real nice.

Well let me give a plug to Ebay. My neigbor bought his tranny from a seller. I attached a link since he sells only trannies and i have to say it came delivered and was real nice. Spent about 12 putting the thing in and he is very pleased. Im waiting for mine to go and i will go this route. Let us know what happens

Cool

Thank you all foy your input. We are still undecided on what to do here. I want my van and am all for anew or rebult transmission. My husband says I should just get rid of it. I could possible swing 1600 for another one (if that included labor...or did you do it yourself) Not too sure I want to or could even afford to buy anything else right now.
thanks again!
Kim
