Coolant disappearing?

Over the last few days I have been noticing that my coolant in the overflow tank has been getting lower and lower everyday. It lowers approx. a 1/2 inch a day. I dont have white smoke coming from the exhaust, and my temp gauge has not gone above the normal (half way) level. I don't see any coolant leaking on my garage floor.

Really dont know what could be causing this, and PLEASE dont tell me it is the headgasket.

Thanks!

Re: Coolant disappearing?

If the exhaust is white, it's burning. I'd suspect the problem is leaking, though. It's either a radiator hose or a turbo hose.. you just have to look around. I've had to replace a turbo coolant line that was leaking at the crappy stock clamps, so look under the car if you can't see it from above.

Re: Coolant disappearing?

I am NT, and there is no white smoke at all. The only thing I can think of is that the coolant is leaking somewhere and staying in the engine compartmant and not hitting the floor.

Re: Coolant disappearing?

it could be leaking only under pressure so when it doesnt run long in your garage you dont notice. park it in your driveway with a sheet of cardboard under it start er up and let it run for awhile then check if you see anything. if you cant find it buy a leak tester at autozone and pressurize the cooling system.

(Jake uses a euphamism for "it's your headgasket")

But seriously, make sure your coolant cap is sealed tightly on the reservoir. If not it can evaporate, obviously. If you have any hole in your system, the coolant could be heating enough to evaporate.

Re: Coolant disappearing?

ashah000;
Check underneath the throttle body where the coolant hoses connect to it. What can happen is that the coolant drips out and collects on the top of the trans. When you're driving the fluid doesn't accumulate very much because of the car jostling around, wind blowing over the trans, etc. It may be that when you park the car the leak is slow enough that the litte bit of fluid that leaks after the car is shut off just stays on top of the trans. It will be pretty obvious if either of these connections has been leaking once you get down there with a flash light and look.

Re: Coolant disappearing?

Oil is fine..

I will check the overflow cap, just wondering if there are any other places that can be loose or have a bad seal that would cause the coolant to evaporate.
