Turbo Q????
What Engine is the best to swap in my 99 EX for TurboCharging? I have done some research on this and I think that the B16 is the best for FI due to the R/S Ratio and the Compression rate. Is this true? Also I want to get the Performer X Edelbrock Turbo kit for the B16 once I swap the engine. I figure with some slight mods after that I would be pushing 250 Hp which is right where I want to be with my Civic anyway. I know someone will throw in the "swap in a GSR engine" phrase that makes it's way into any thread that involves power upgrades or swapping, but I know that engine has to high compression. Let me know what people think.

You know that engine has too much compression, but did you know that B16A's have more compression than GSR's?
![]() A b16 is a decent swap, but the GSR is better. It will make more power per pound of boost, have a much nicer power curve, and spool the turbo quicker than the B16. Some people also argue that the B16's gearing is too short for a turbo motor (although I think it's great) and that the GSR tranny is perfect. The new Drag turbo kits are coming out with a much better built turbo manifold (Has the wastegate on the collector instead of on one runner, so you get much better boost control and no creep) and paired up with Hondata would make a great bolt on to a stock GSR motor. |

If all you want is 250hp, do not swap in the GSR motor. Just swap in the cheaper b16, and turbo it. For swaps both have higher compression, some B16 have higher compression than the GSR motor and some don't. (JDM GSR - 10.6), (SI - 10.4) USDM is (SI - 10.2) GSR - 10.1

if you only want 250hp, a stock block b16 can make that power, but if you plan on running alittle more power after, then i would suggest b18c.
but both blocks can reach its stock internal limit and a reasonable amount of boost |

why swap your motor? Build your SOHC to hold 25lbs. and buy a Greddy Turbo kit, easy 250+

D16Y8 My first 1000 went to my backyard turbo kit. 7psi. I made 160whp/135wtq. I did a Mild build up, forged pistons, stock rods, t3 turbo. Made 220whp/190wtq @15psi. From there I built the head, Stage 2 Crower turbo cam, springs, retainers, .5mm oversized valves, mild PnP, and 17psi. Car was faster, Also had untuned standalone S200B Hondata. I never got to dyno the last setup. As I overboosted 26psi, and snapped a rod. That was fun.

I used a 45 trim t3, "retard". If I woulda upgraded to a t3/t4 like comes on most kits, I would've made much more power. Before you go spouting off, you should understand how FI works.
I had a turbo that maxed out at ~220whp. With good reason, I didnt upgrade the rods because I ran out of money. I didnt have a large enough turbo, so they weren't a priority. It's little known that D series make more torque under boost then a B16 does. Granted it makes slightly less power, but when you factor in the cost of a swap (~$1500) A few extra psi will match up the power quite well. Stock bottom end D16Y8's will put down around 300whp before snapping. Just FYI.

Back on topic however... A b16 will make 250whp on about 8psi on a .57 trim t3/t4.

yO i didn't mean to call you a retard,Its just that when you were like "haha" i had to say something. With all that aftermarket parts and machine work...how much did that add up? I bet it was expensive. Thats why i said you can make that kind of hp on a stock b16. My friends gsr with a drag gen 3 turbo kit made 273 whp and like 203 lbs of tq? That was at 10 psi.I forgot it was 2 years ago but i'm pretty sure it was around there. Thats stock. Its a bit expensive but for someone who doesn't feel like tearin the motor apart (which theres quite a few ppl) i think its a good way to get power without messing around with anything else. Of course its cheaper to go d-series but then you wont see those kind of numbers when u just slap on just a turbo. You can get a LS swap for 700-1000 or even a b20 for that kind of price.

Hondata, .57 trim, stock GSR, DRAG3 kit.
8psi 289whp 208wtq. That's what my friends hatch made. I spend a total of about 3K on the setup. Including 2 rebuilds because the first engine builder over honed the cylinder walls, and I needed a new block.

My friend didn't have hondata on his. Just slapped on the turbo and dyno'ed it right away.
