I have 1986 Jeep Cherokee 4wd 5 speed 6 cyl. Yesterday it started a new trick after driving 18 miles its staying idled too high. Could this be the tps sensor? Help!!!!!!!!When I stop with the clutch its way idled up!!!! Thanks Shroomlady

Hey Ironic thanks for the quick post. I had my Son-In-Law look at it this evening and he hit the gas pedal real quick and it let go. Then I was on my way home and I had to hit the pedal again. So now I wonder if its my throttle sticking and the tps....Scream way out loud!!!!

There is a recall on Cherokees for extremely high rpm's after start-up.
The dealer should install a shift interlock which requires the break to be engaged prior to the car being started and engaged in drive I believe.
This was the result of various models/manufactures' vehicles running through garages and over people when they were started and took off on their drivers.
I haven't had it installed on my car because I don't like dealers touching it. My vehicle in the 7 years I've had it has reved high about 4 times upon starting, but I've always had the break on before I shifted into drive.

Thanks Viper....Mine does it after its warmed up has been for 3 days...Took it to an auto mechanic and it stopped doing it. Theres no hoses loose and he says if it was the tps it would do it all the time..He thinks maybe since my gas is low I might have some trash in my tank.So I put some Lucas for fuel in it... Thanks again Shroomlady

Sad Thing is, when mine went bad- it was only intermittant, idle was fine that 1 time, then revved to 3000 rpm once I dropped it in gear- at 3000 rpm, even standing on the brake ain't gonna stop you- if I did'nt slide it out of gear, I'd have been shellin out the big bucks for that parked car
