85 Supra Rear End Clunk
I have an 85 Supra with a LSD and it makes a light clunking sound when I accelerate or decelerate. The driveshaft and its bearings are not the problem. I have narrowed it down to the LSD. I have taken the cover off and inspected the gears and the backlash between the ring and pinion is not the problem. It appears to be the LSD components inside the ring assembly that are causing the clunk sound. The LSD looks like it uses a wedge type action to force pressure on the disc plates and it is this wedge action that is making the noise. There doesn't appear to be any wear marks in this wedge system. Does anyone else have a MKII Supra with a LSD that makes a clunking sound? Is this a normal thing for these cars as they get older?
