Junk tires

Bought a new set of tires. Goodyears Eagle LS. Told they wear very good tires, by the salesmen. Now I don't normaly listen to sale people, but this clown ownes a 2004 GTP.
They day after I bought them, I had a "lady" doing 35 in a 55 in front of me. Kicked it to pass her and the tires broke loss. To lose traction at 35 MPH just isn't going to get it.
They are taken tires back, but I need a new set. I want something with a Z rating that will grab and hold on.
I would list everything that I have in the car, but the list is too long.
Any idea on a good set? Thanks

Re: Junk tires

ah yes, the old treadlife vs traction dillemma. you can't have both good tread life and good traction on dry pavement. Good traction requires soft compounds which equals faster wear. Try to find a good compromise, like a grand touring tire. Unless you are into ultimate traction, they give a good all around performance.

Re: Junk tires

Ultimate traction has nothing to do with this one. I live in Floida and drive US 19 to work. In the 8 miles I drive to work, 5 of the deadlest intersections in the US I go thur. PLUS 8,000 old people that want to do 35 in a 55.
But when you just it some gas at 35 and the tire turn over, that's bad.
I'm getting a set of Dunlop SP sprot 5000. The guy told me that I would get about 12000 miles out of them, but they will hold the road. I'd reather buy a new set every year, then can't stop in the rain.
Anyone know anything about the Dunlop SP sprot 5000?

Re: Junk tires

I've heard that Michelin pilots are supposed to grip really well. But that they only last like 20K miles. I have to admit that I like my Michelin HydroEdge's, though I'm not putting as much torque on them as a GTP would. All the HydroEdge's do is chirp at the line and grab and go. And in the wet, they are fantastic!

I'd stay away from Firestone. Too many bad memories, too many bad tires over the years. Anyone remember the 521s?

Re: Junk tires

Well I bought the Dunlop SP sprot 5000. Took them out today and put 100 miles on them. Pulled a hole shot. Tires did their job. Then around 35, hit it again, stuck like glue.
Then with the wife in the car, some "hero" in a Pontiac GT, 97 or 98 wanted to run. We were out in the middle of nowhere. So I stopped it in the middle of the street. Went from zone to 60. Had him by about 4 car links. Never thought the GT were that slow. I always thought mine was pretty fast.
Well the wife got mad, the kid got beat. I was the only winner. And the tires worked GREAT.
These should last about 12 to 15,000 miles. But they are worth the price ($140.00 each). When these are gone, I'll the Michelin Pilots.
Thanks guys,

Quit spraying the sidewalls of your tires with that shiney slickem stuff, and they will grip much better..MUCH BETTER..

Re: Junk tires

Jeff,
I'm not doing the bottoms. Can't have a clean looking car with dirty tires. Right now they are dirty on bottoms and sides. We get rain every day in the summer.

I hear what you're saying... I spray my sidewalls too.. But I noticed one day, after giving my car a good detailing.. That when I tried to crack off from a stop light with a Monte Carlo SS.. My tires broke loose and the frontend went sideways, with not a whole lot of throttle input.. I assumed that was because of the foam spray and shine I had just hit my tires with ..

Re: Junk tires

When I first bought my GTO (1966, new) We used floor wax to make them look good. But did it do a job on your tires. Cut the life almost in half.
I spray the sidewalls about 4 times a year now. About every other waxing. When you live in Florida and have a black car, you build up your arms waxing your car. But if I know I'm going to be doing any racing, there very dull.
Take care Jeff.
