|
hotwiring or bypassing ignition switch '92
hello,
no i am not trying to steal someones car, the ignition switch in my 92 ranger stopped working. it wont turn. i have 2 sets of keys and it wont turn for either of them. the problem has been increasing in the past two weeks. this morning it denied me. i ripped off the plastic cover and tried looking to see how i might loosten it up. i havent a clue. does the whole switch come out? any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. i cant afford to get it fixed. i'd rather start it w/ a screw driver then pay to have it fixed. thank you in advance don

The ignition switch is farther down your steering column. The ignition lock cylinder is what accepts the key. The lock cylinder has a small hole on the bottom side. Normally, you put the proper key in the lock, turn to the next position and then push a pick/small screwdriver in the hole (to depress a button) and then the cylinder assy pulls straight out.
Do you have any resistance putting in or pulling out the key? If not, then the connection between the cyl and the switch or the switch could be binding up, which would cause the lock cyl to not turn. The most likely problem is the cyl is corroded. Douse it with penetrating oil and try to get it to turn enough to remove it. then buy a junkyard lock or a dealer lock (don't get it coded-$$!) just use the blank/generic key that comes with it.

and if you're lazy, or just plain don't feel like spending much money, you can just hook up a momentary-on switch. I did this on my last ranger, and it was pretty sweet. all you have to do is pull in a wire in with 12v and one that is connected to the starter selenoid. then, hook up the two wires to the switch, and then you have a way to start your truck and bypass the starter switch...
words to the wise.... 1) have TWO momentary-on switches, or a couple other switches (in series) that have to be lined up the right way for the switch to have access to 12v. If you don't, it is very easy to accidentally hit the starter switch while driving and really F up your truck 2) make sure you lock your truck, ALWAYS, or you may not have it much longer
