shifter issues

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with my shifter. I have all the plastic stuff off around the shifter and when the shifter is in the park position the transmission is actually in nuetral, so I can't get to reverse or park. The rodeo is driving fine I just can't get to reverse or park, it is a 1999 A/T. It is like it went two gears down. Please help. Thanks

Re: shifter issues

I think, there is an electronic gismo that goes bad with the shifter is in the wrong place. Someone else will have to confirm this.

Sounds like your shift cable is somehow out of whack. Check to see where the cable connects to the shift arm (and range sensor) out the driver's side of the tranny. Make sure the hold down nut is tight & everything is in place. Have somebody move the gear lever while you are under the truck to see how it's moving.
G/luck

Re: shifter issues

In a kind of a bind. Was working on a '99 Rodeo and found that the inner cable spiral near the tranny has been damaged, so I need to replace the cable ASAP. First question is how much stuff do I need to remove to access the cable at the shift lever, and is this cable available at NAPA, or is it a car specific part from Isuzu? Unfortunately, I'm Manual deficient at the moment.

TIA
