98 Durango starts, but won't idle

Love this site. Have problem with 98 Durango. Starts, but unless I keep gas pedal depressed, engine stops. Had to have it towed. Dealer could not find anything wrong. On this site, I found 3 similiar situations. All turned out to be battery problem, even though battery appeared OK. I am replacing battery tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'd clean and re-make the battery connections, and get the battery tested before making my first response the spending of 50+ bucks on a new battery! (But maybe you've already done that...)

Your advice is probably correct. But,
Battery is probably close to 4 years old. Would most likely need to replace in the near future. Lucky I was in work parking lot when issue first surfaced. Dealer still has Durango and says could not find anything wrong.

Probably the throttle position sensor that is out of whack, or your idle air control valve isn't working at all...

If it starts and won't idle, it should be obvious to the dealer that there is something wrong, no?

Did you ever get this fixed? My 2000 durango is having the same problem. It will start but I have to throttle it to keep it running. I have a new battery. I can't figure it out.

Must be bad if the dealer doesnt even know or cant find the answer to this problem. If you have auto start or recently worked on your vehicles wires, re-check you wires and battery.

Re: 98 Durango starts, but won't idle

I got my idle problem fixed. I took my battery to Autozone and had it tested. It was deader than dead and would not charge. After I replaced the battery I still had the same problem. So I played around with the battery wires and made sure that they were all tightend properly and that fixed it. Good luck to anyone that has this problem.
