clunking sound when starrting to move

Hi, I have a 99 4 door LS 4X4, when I first start to drive after sitting for a while I hear a fairly loud thump that sounds like it is coming from the right front end. I have only heard it once while driving, but that was a few weeks ago. Whenever I am going to work or coming home from work it happens when I first start to move, no matter how far I turn the wheel (if at all).
I also have a question about my rpm's. When I start the truck it revs high (about 12-1300 at idle) but once I drive for about 30 seconds it goes to about 800 at idle. It has always been loud while accelerating, but this is getting annoying.
Thanks for all your help!

Do you let the truck idle down before you take off?

Also, check your brake caliper for the clunk, you might need new caliper pins or your caliper itself is not letting the pads come back all the way.

If it only clunks when you turn the steering wheel, as opposed to just backing or pulling straight out, You might want to have your front end checked out for loose/worn parts. (Tie rods, Pitman arm etc.) I had an experience with a different vehicle where the tapered fitting on one of the components was loose and caused a loud clunking noise when turning left or riding over bumps.

Thank you for your response... the single clunking sound is made when backing up and typically occurs when the steering wheel is turn while backing up. It only happens during that intial time backing up.

I have had the right front axle replace due a CV boot problem. I was curious if this scenario is related to the recall in 2001 for the front control arm (ball joint).

Ah, I now see.

Grab a grease gun and crawl under your front end and grease all the 11 grease fitting on there.

Chance are you just have a dry joint that needs grease.
