2003 Suburban Smoke on Startup
2003 Suburban with 34000 miles on it .. Started it up the other day after sitting for a week or so and there was a noticeable cloud of gray smoke that came from the tailpipe. Should this be happening with such llimited mileage ?
Thanks |

Your smoke could very well be coming from your valve guide seals, nothing to worry about if you notice no excessive oil usage.
I know of engines with less mileage than yours with the same problem. If you use the truck on a daily basis, do you still notice smoke on start-up? -slacker

Your truck should still be under warranty. If the valve guide seals are bad, You should let GM pay for the repair.

Your truck came with a 3 year/ 36000 mile factory bumper to bumper warranty...take it to your dealer and have them take a look

It could be the PCV valve. The 5.3 liter V8 has a problem with them because the ball valve sticks and causes oil to blow by the top of the engine resulting in those white puffs of smoke when you start the car...
Believe me, GM nor Chevy will do nothing to help you. I have fought with them over this problem for 4 years. I have 85,000 mile on a 2000 Sub. It started "puffing" at 1500 miles and they did oil consumption tests for the next 20,000 miles! They replaced the PCV valve, but the GM definition of excessive oil consumption is greater than one quart of oil per 1000 miles! Mine was using one quart every 1200 miles. I gave up on them and in the intervening 60,000 miles my car has pumped 12.5 gallons of oil into the atmosphere. The solution came from the manager of a quick oil change business that showed me an alert that his company had put out for owners of GM 5.3 liter V8 engines that the problem could be solved by using a fixed orifice PCV valve that did not have a ball valve. I went to the local Chevy dealer parts department and they did not have it. I went back to the oil change place and got the GM part number from the article, went back to the Chevy dealer an he found the part. I installed it myself and the car has not done any "puffing" for the last 5000 miles. Total cost for the part ..... $1.65. Total disgust with GM ...... !!!!!!!! |
