Question Power Steering

My parents and I are seriously considering purchasing a '97 Civic DX that a person is selling. It runs great, it has everything I need for a schoolcar, and is in excellent condition. The only problem with it is that it lacks power steering, and I'm used to power steering and really don't want to drive it if it doesn't have it. I was wondering if there was a way to get power steering installed extra from somewhere like you can have power locks and windows put in. Thanks!

its really not that bad unless your going supr slow. if you really want power steering get a car with it in it already. im not saying that to be a dick but its so much easier and cost effective.

No power steering? I have a 97 DX, and I have power steering. and I don't remember it being an option.

I drove the car already, and I'm trying to buy it from some guy, so it's not really an option to get power steering from him. But if you can have power steering put on is what I'm asking. Like at an automotive shop or something. And it's only bad if your turning tight or in a parking lot.

you could but it would get really expensive quickly,I say try it adn if you don't like it,buy another one.
My car has no pwr steering and I like it like that, more precise and responsive I think.

You could also try getting a pump from a 96-98 EX and try to bolt it up instead of having a automotive shop put an aftermarket one on there. Just a thought.

Man... buy the car and drive it around before you worry about the power steering. I will bet you'll get used to it. I don't have power steering and now that I've been driving it this way for a while, I like it. I actually prefer it now. If you find later, that it's absolutely necessary for you to add power steering, then do it. Otherwise... if it bugs you so much right now, just pass on the car and get a different one equipped with power steering.

No, what I meant was, I don't remember it being an option at the dealership, so I thought all civics (even the lowly DX) came with power steering.

See I've never heard of a 97 without power steering either. May be a stupid question but are you sure it doesn't have power steering and the pump is just out? I assume it doesn't have AC so that would mean that there is no AC belt and no power steering belt so there would only be 1 belt for the alternator. That is the easiest way to tell. (Well in that case for all we know the belt might be missing for the power steering ) Just take a double check to make sure there isn't a power steering pump cuz if there is and it just isn't working then there ya go...power steering!

ah

get it w/o power steering....much more fun to drive, more responsive....'long as you keep air in the tires, you'd be fine....myself, i dont have power steering (92 cx) and i like it that way...at first, i thought i wanted it...but you dont even notice unless you are going < 5mph

And then both of you guys w/ you sewing maching powered cars get passed by a moped w/ a 5hp Engine and he goes on to put 5 car lengths on you. Racing an EX vs a DX is like a 10 speed bike vs a golden retriever.

get it without the pwr steering you wont be sorry. my car has no pwr steering and i have 16" 205's on it and it is not a big deal. the road feel is much better, also high speed driving feels more secure. when i drive my friends civic with pwr. steering it feels like a caddy. another advantage is 4-5 extra horses.
