Money is too hard to come by!

Man, I've been looking into a new car for a while, and im set on a 87-93 stang. I will be modifying it extremely, and i already see that 93's are no good? maybe? Is there any other year in that range that is exceptionally good or bad? Also, im looking for a 5.0, is there much performance diffrence in GT and LX 5.0's? Next question: If i happend to get a 4 cylinder, would an engine swap be hard, and how much would a normal stang v8 go for? Sorry for the questions, but im trying to do this for as cheap as possible, i have like NO money coming in, only that paying my debts ;p

I like 89's, that my personal opinion. reason being first year for mass air, first year for 140mph Speedo, no air bags to deal with, and late model 89's are 25th anniversary models. there's a ton of other picky things that i could get into about differences, but those listed are the major ones. the only difference between LX's and GT's are pretty much style. a LX is lighter, and GT slightly heavier, but looks better. a notchback would be another option there the lightest of the bunch, and i think look pretty nice for a coupe. A notchback in going to be my next project. I wouldn't buy a 4 cyl and swap it cause it will be a major project and cost more then you will probely want to spend. by the time you finished the swap you will more then likely have spent more on it then just buying a 5.0 in the first place. take care
Craig

The fox body is the way to go, stay away from 93's because of the therpeutic pistons, 91's and 92's have forged pistons and these hold up better with mods. I've seen these stock blocks support 500 HP.

91 and 92 also feature the pony wheels which are quite popular still today. I've always thought the LX models look cleaner while the GT's ground effects can look dated and don't age as well.

I like autotrader.com for shopping around and getting to know prices.

I've had an 88 GT, a 91 LX and a 96 GT and I miss the LX the most!

What about airbags? I have never been in a wreck and used them, are they real life savers? I would rather spare the looks and a few other things to save my life, however i dont know how necisary they are. Whats the scoop?

I think 90+ has the driverside airbags, but I'm not 100% on that. I had a 91 LX and it had it. So 91 + for sure.

Will it save your ass? I don't think anyone can answer that. What I do know is a good friend of mine in California lost control of his 89 GT and took out a telephone poll. LAPD thought there was no way anyone could survive that and where very surprised to see that Brian had only broken his leg and had some cuts. The reason is he had a six point weld in cage, racing seats and was wearing a Schroff harness at the time.

But I believe that above a certain speed there's not much airbags and belts can do for you.

Also, these cars have wonderful 5.0 engines but the brakes leave something to be desired, disks in the front and DRUMS in the back. If your really going out driving, invest in a good kit with larger disks in the front and add them in the back. It's big money, but worth it.
