AT manual shift?...

My friend has a AT 93 civic and for some reason he likes to shift it manually...Not only when he's racing but all the time, he even lets go of the gas like if he's shifting it. i keep telling hime he's going to screw up his transmisson but he wont listen. Will shifting an AT tranny manually all the time mess it up?

I would at least tell him to get a shift kit to put in that thing if he's going to manual shift...I've done it in alot of cars dont seem to mess it up but yea i say it would..My friend u to do that same shit use it like a 5 speed but he had a shift kit tough until he did 5 speed convesion in his civic...

I wouldnt suggest it. Does he do it to make it look manual? Or does he do it cause he wishes he had or could drive stick?

I would guess he does it to make it look like a manual...wishing it was a five speed but not to good of an idea on stock componets...

That's just messing up the tranny. Last time i checked..If you want to drive an auto hard..I think you're supposed to just slam on the gas pedal.

Yup you are right. To go faster you need to press that pedal

Moving the automatic stick back and forth is slower than just leaving it drive and just pressing on the gas.

Yes an no. Doing it all the time is dumb. In my car I do it on occasion just so the tranny will downshift sooner if I'm going to do an accelerating pass like on the freeway if I'm stuck behind a semi and I want to get in with faster flow of traffic. I'll only do a D4 to D3 shift, and when I'm done passing, I'll put it back in D4. The manual for my car actually says to do that for a quicker downshift for passing purposes. Otherwise mashing the gas for a downshift can make it lag since it has to be "in the right range" to do it on it's own.

When I auto-X, I'll start out in D3 and when the tranny shifts from 1st to 2nd, I'll put the shifter into "2" and leave it there, and i'll keep me in the optimum power band for the duration of the course, otherwise putting it in any "D" gear will make the tranny shift around too much, thus hurting my times. "2" allows the tranny to stay locked in 2nd gear and won't let it shift up or down.

Ah I remember autocrossing my automatic 1993 Civic Ex. What a pain. At some courses the car would downshift to 1st and totally mess up the balance of the car causing the car to understeer. Hated that

yeah, he wants it to be a 5 spd... he's always wanted a 5spd but found a really cheap AT (as did i, mine was cheaper though)...Well i'll check back if it ever takes a dump on him.

Great thing about 6th gen auto trannys. The pattern goes "P R N D4 D3 2" No "1" position selection. Putting the shifter into "2" locks the car into 2nd gear no matter what's going on. Locked as in it WON'T shift up or down unless you move the shifter to another position. Putting it in "2" at a stop, will start the car off in 2nd gear for deep snow/mud type situations so you don't spin your wheels. When I put the car in "2" while auto-X'ing, it's great because it locks the car in without any worry of the tranny upshifting or downshifting on you when least expected or needed.

Well the course we had today I shifted like 4 times on course. It was a tight course leading into a long section then back into a tight section. When I shifted 4 times that's when I got my best run. I hate courses like that

Yeah, it's hard when you have to brake and accelerate so much, ontop of clutching and shifting, and of course steering. Though at a dissadvantage because of the obvious, this is where an auto can shine, feet aren't occupied by a clutch, and hands don't have to be occupied by a stick.
