67 Corvette New Engine and Perf. Increase
Hi, i recently bought a 67 corvette with a 327 ci. But it want to put in a new 427 ci. I was wondering if anyone could tell me:
1) Where a new 427 ci engine is sold? (i tried GMgoodwrench but there is no 427) 2) If a blower could fit under the hood (without altering the original appearence) 3) And what performance modifications you would recommend to increase hp and torque.. Thanks a lot... |

you may want to search the web to find one, some autoparts stores can order you one, and also some salvage yards could get you one as a last resort and you rebuild it, and i dont think that you will be able to get a blower that will fit under the hood of a vette. as for performance im not that big on the 427's (dont own anything it will fit in) but i would say do the heads (port and polish), also a alluminum performer intake and carb, and some high dallar pistons.

Re: 67 Corvette New Engine and Perf. Increase
Bill Mitchel hardcore racing sells an affordable small block 427 based off the 400 block that would give you the displacement you want, while being a direct bolt in swap. granted its not the bragging rights of a big block, but its an angle to consider. as far as a supercharger, a vortec centerfugial supercharger will easily fit under the hood, and they sell a carburater kit that will work with your engine setup.
as far as a big block 427, id have to do a bit of looking to find one. ill see if i can get around to it, but im pretty swamped right now. although lingenfelter engineering has 427cid LS1 engines that would be damn sexy in a 67 vette they also have them in the Twin Turbo variety

You should check Performance Automotive Wholesalers in california (PAW) for a 427 and NO, it will not fit a roots type blower under the hood. A Paxton blower will fit snugly, but you will not have to cut the hood. As far as performance, leave the Vette at home as it will be too heavy with the big block in it. Been there, done this. If you are determined...go aluminum and dont ask how much. An 350 will do much better, and the parts are much more accessible. Breaking a mouse is far cheaper than the rat engine. Your stock rear end will not hold up under a modified Rat engine either.

Thanks Guys...
Thanks a lot guys, a really appreciate the help.. It really helped me out understand my questions about the supercharger, and where to find the parts...
I just have a question to "thlew61", you say that the stock end would not hold under a big block with a supercharger. You mean that under the power of the engine i would lose handling, or because the big block and the charger would weigh down the front side causing to mishandle... thanks again.... Jason |

Re: 67 Corvette New Engine and Perf. Increase
Well, I am not thlew61, but allow me to hazard a guess. What he was talking about was the size of the older corvettes, coupled with the weight of an iron big block combine to produce very noticeable understeer, meaning that as you approach a turn, and begin to turn the wheel, the car will tend to want to keep going strait, and youll have to turn the wheel harder to turn the way you intended, which can lead to the rear end coming around.
If you plan on road racing, or autocrossing, i would agree that a big block, especially an iron one, is not the best choice. However if you plan on drag racing and weekend cruizing, focusing on strait line stuff, a big block will do ya just fine. I simply point out again that a 427 small block would give you the displacement, with minimal hassle, and lower weight. ya just lose the bragging rights of saying you have a big block.

Keep in mind
Just to let you know if you change motors, there is usually a 1/3 reduction in value on your car.Non matching numbers on your vette will really hurt your resale.Performance parts are a dime a dozen for a smallblock.427's are getting rare 454's are easy to pick up.The big block is a easy swap just make sure you hang on to the smallblock. With just a little time and money the 327 will give you all the power you'll need.
