Removing rear seats to install speakers?

Hi,

I own an Eagle Vision ESi, it's part of the LH series from Chrysler (Intrepid, Concord, etc).

I was trying to install my new rear speakers. I thought that I had to remove the rear seat backrests in order to popup the rear dash. My stock speakers don't have a grill, so obviously I have to remove the rear dash to unscrew the speakers. However, i don't know how to remove the backrest. I already removed the rear seats, but can someone point out to me how to remove the backrest?

I strongly doubt that I'm the only one on this forum that has tried changing their rear speakers. Someone must know how to replace stock speakers. My stock rear speakers don't have a grill (they're under a "dashboard"). How would I remove this "dashboard" under my rear window in order to reach the bolts for the speakers?

Re: Removing rear seats to install speakers?

That rear 'dashboard' is a welded part of the structure of the car (at least in every car I have ever seen since the 1950's)
Usually these speakers are bolted to the underside of this panel. Climb into the trunk and unscrew them from below.

Ditto to MagicRat. Get in the trunk. Make sure you prop it open or have some with you, my buddy got locked in his and was stuck till his mother came home and let him out. Good thing he was blocking her garage access.

LOL man I hate having a car that's so different from everyone else's!

I doubt mine is welded beacuse it's made out of wood with some "carpeting" on it. When I climb into the trunk, I see the screws holding the speakers in place. However, from where i'm looking at them, I see a sharp and pointy end. The speakers are dropped down from ontop and are being held as if they are in a cup holder (if you get what I mean).

------------------- <--- Without the piece of wood, that's how the dashboard would look if I look down onto it. The speakers are dropped down into those 6x9 holes and are bolted down.

It sounds as if someone has done a custom installation/ butcher job. Chrysler never used wood to make that deck.
You will likely have to figure out whats been done and reverse it or take it to a car stereo shop.

But it looks exactly like its cousins (The intrepids and concords). It's not really wood but from under, it looks like it's wood. From ontop, it looks like all the other LH series cars (a fluffy carpeting). I'm going to try and push up the wood from inside the trunk and see if that does anything. The job doens't look very custom to me. It looks like it's never been touched in its life.

The 'wood' might just be the cardboard or fiberboard backing for the carpet. You will just have to investigate it. I can't imagine the installation is too complicated as the people on the car assembly line have about 10 seconds to install the speakers, so it has to be simple.
Post your findings and let us know.

LOL oh man. I just wasted 30 minutes and I still couldn't get it open. You're right, it's some sort of fiber that has the colour of wood. The carpeting goes on it. However, after some agressive fighting with it, it won the fight and knocked me out in 30 minutes. I honestly have no idea how to remove it. I see a bunch of thing that just snap it but can't be snaped out without destroying them!

I dont know if this drawing helps but it's the drawing of one of the clips to the back dashboard.

Now you can try sliding the clip right but that doesn't work because the dashboard is behind the seat's backrest. Also, I don't know how to remove the backrest for the seats. I know how to remove the seat, but not the backrest :S!

SUCCESS!

I got my new speakers in. I went to dodgeintrepid.net (A forum for the LH series cars). They told me that I had to remove my seatbelt bolts in order to remove the backrest. Then i had to remove the dash by pulling it straight out and bending it in the middle. From there, I had to mess around with the screws for the speakers and pull them up to remove them.
