'90 Bonne door locks

"90 Bonne, electric door locks. L R door would not open one day. All linkages and manual lever move significantly when electrically unlocked. Same problem later with driver's door. That door problem went away. Now, RR door will not open, again, all linkages and manual levers move significantly when electrically operated. Probably associated with the actuators, lots of trouble to repair. These doors will not open from inside or out, they are still locked. Has anyone experienced this problem, before I tear doors apart? I have an aftermarket repair manual for this year, make and model vehicle, if anyone needs info.

If you are still having problems with those locks (more than likely your problem is the latches) then look here.

I encountered two problems with my rear doors:

Driver's side: This latch was rusted to the point that the part that releases the "claws" would not move. When I finally got the door open it was a matter of a removing the latch and giving it a good cleaning and lube job.

Passenger's side: This latch assembly has a spring dissolve into a rusty dust cloud before I bought the car. Once the door was opened, the latch assembly was removed and repaired as indicated in the link. The missing spring is what prevents the door from unlocking.

On a side note, my drivers side rear door is no longer opening. More than likely the spring on this side has gone bye byes as well. I just havent had time to get in there since it had happened.

Thanks randman1, that makes a lot of sense. As I said, they go through all the motions, just don't unlock. As my book shows, the door and vent glass need to be removed to gain access in there to the actuators. Youn had to remove the glass, rivets and all those items? I am trying to avoid that, and waiting for parts, the car needs to be driven while waiting. That could be risky in Chicago, no glass in doors. But, if that is the way it has to be..... I will refer to my shop manual on your new input. I can get the parts before disassembly. Thanks again.

My book states the vent window has to be removed but, according to the photo you provided, it apperas the latch mechanism is accessible without doing that? Do you have power locks, if that would make a difference?

There was no need to remove any glass, rivets or otherwise. The guide that seperates the moving and the stationary window was loosened just enough to allow the removal of the latch assembly. There are two torx bolts that need to be removed. One is right with the three other torx bolts that secure the latch and the other one is along the top of the door just below the glass. There is a third in the top of the window frame but I didn't remove it. Disconnect the three rods that connect to the latch as well as the three torx bolts. Essentially, the latch assembly straddles the guide so once the bolts are removed, move the guide forward about an inch or so. The latch needs to me moved upward as high as it can go in the door, around the guide and out of the door.

If your hands are as big as mine, expect some minor cuts and scratches. I felt that I can live with these rather than taking the time to drill out the rivets and taking out the panel.

PS Yes, I do have power locks too.

Yeah, just like those dealer types, remove every little piece to gain access. Not necessary huh? Great! I will dig into those doors, one at a time very soon. I will let all know what I found and repaired. This is the reason I contacted this forum, for real, counsumer, hands on advice, Thanks.

Take some pics if you can. Getting the doors open so the latches can be worked on is probably the most difficult part of the whole ordeal. I think it's time that I do the same and get my LR door operational again so I'll try to post some pics too.

A couple years ago, I got the left door open somehow. I removed the seat in order to remove the door panel. Once in there, it appeared I had to do serious door disassembly and did not have the time to have the vehicle inoperable while I was determinig and ordering parts. I put the panel back on to think about it! The door locked again! Only now am I ready to go back in there. Photos, no problem. Posting them, I will have to figure out. Again, I have a factory service manual for this vehicle, (1990 Bonne') anyone need page photos or other info? I will keep you posted.

You may want to refrain from posting copywritten material in a public forum. Someone could get into some trouble. As far as the pictures go, sign up on photobucket. This is a free place to post pictures for remote linking. Once they are uploaded to the site, you link to them by using the following code:

Code:
[img]www.photobucket.com/?youraccountname?/?picturename?[/img]
If you right click on this image then click properties

you will see the location of the picture. Actually, Photobucket includes the img tags so all you have to do is copy and paste.

Re: '90 Bonne door locks

How I fixed my 89 when rear doors would not unlock. Lower rear window. While unlocking and locking the door manually with one hand, bang on the outside of the door with your other hand just below and a bit toward the front of the car. The locking mechanism will eventually release.

90 SSE Door Locks

It's a manufacturer's defect (sorry GM, it's true). The internal nylon components of the door locks just get worn out. I had an embarrasing situation with a GM guy in my car and he couldn't get out. I was able to make some calls to the plant (Wentzville, MO at the time) and the dealer was told to replace the old ones.

Thanks all for your inputs. I just haven't had the time to tear into those doors yet. Who cares, the other car the wife drives is a '76 Corvette, it has only two doors! After all, I do not drive any more due to poor eyesight. She also has to park the car for me to work on it!
