That damn s light!!!!!!!
I have a 91 honda accord ex just lately the s light on the shifter has been coming on and only gives me a few gears...The speedo and tach still work but I have no first gear and it will only upshift to about third. I checked the codes and got no codes from the computer(yes I know how to check the codes).
My question is how can I find out if it's the speed pulsar, speed sensor or the transmission computer without buying one at a time? Thanks in advance. |

Re: That damn s light!!!!!!!
You need a TCM. Under the passenger side carpet. It's a common problem for 90-93 Accord.

Re: That damn s light!!!!!!!
I had almost the same problem. I took my car to Honda and they told me the tranny was starting "to go" did not give me the specifics. At that point I did an Engine/tranny swap, and the S light went away. The car still the same TCU in it. Sorry if this dosen't help

Re: That damn s light!!!!!!!
Can you move the shift stick out of Park without depressing the brake paddle? If yes, it's your TCM.
When this problem happened to my 92 Accord, I visited couple tranny shop, 3 assured me, with a single smell of the trans oil, that my tranny is gone/clutch melted/gear deadlocked, and I definitely need a new or rebuilt tranny. They quoted me from $2500 to $4000. I was very suspecious since I can still manually shift the gear and the car run great on highway, it's impossible with a failed Tranny. Common sense told me it's not a mechnical problem. I searched the net and found a Honda TSB, stating exactly the problem. It's the TCU. I got one from a junk yard for $50. It's been 2 years and the car runs great! Most shops, especially the dealers, want your money and they will try everything to scare you into doing un-necessary repair/fix. I am glad that I didn't fell for the story the shops told me and saved thousands of dollars. I used this saved money to go on cruise with my whole family. I have seen too many cases the mechanics play on their customers trying to squeeze big bucks out of them. Keep in mind, they want your money, they will probably not tell you what is really going on. You have to find the truth yourself then tell the mechanic what to do. I know it's not easy without understanding of how cars work. But, gradually, you will become familiar with cars and doing a little home work could save you a lot! |

I got a new TCM (transmission computer) and that fixed the problem.
