HEMI is killin me

ive got an 03' HEMI ram. I LOVE THIS TRUCK. Problem is, gas where i live is $2.30 A GALLON. I drive alot for work, and end up spending at least $200.00 a month on gas, on top of my $450.00 payment and my $100.00 insurance. im paying roughly $850.00 a month for this truck. so, i have two choices get rid of my truck and buy a car. or figure out a way to substantially increase my gas mileage. (i average 10 city, 19 hwy).

Get your work to pay for gas, reimburse you for miles, or give you a car allowance.

Re: HEMI is killin me

Hell if I could spend only 200 a month on gas I would be happy. I don't know what you are bitching about. Being it's a 2003 you haven't had it really long. So WTF was going through your head when you bought. It should have been hey I drive a lot maybe I should buy a car, and then a cheap truck if I really need it. Anyways there really isn't anything that is going to drastically improve your mpg's.

Unhappy fuel

I know how you feel but if you get 19\highway that is about the best you will ever get. I go 140 klm to work each day 2004 rumble bee 4X4 hemi and I get 17\highway so I use the wifes car and let her take my truck she only go'es 10 klm and up here we pay allmost $400 for a canadian gallon. If I were you I would find a second car [beater] for work.

My boss put a cold air intake on his ram 6 cylinder diesel and cut off the muffler and made it into a straight pipe. It gained 2+ mpg. Its not much but it is better than nothing. He gets 11 mpg hauling a 35 ft trailer. Don't get the wing for it though he claims it does not work.

Re: HEMI is killin me

Think about it, with fuel being as costly as it is, in 10000 miles, think of all the money you'll have saved...

Do you really need a truck that size? $200 a month seems absolutely insane to me. If you need the truck for work then you should get some kind of reinbursement from your employer. I'm with BleedDodge on this one. If you can't afford it, do what you have to do.

say u pay 1.85 for gas, so if now you average about 15mpg, and do the intake and exhaust and gain 2mpg so that ur average is 17mpg, think about it you'll save at least 750$ after 50k miles

Yeah, but you'll pay at least $750 for the intake and exhaust. So in the end he only breaks even.

Re: HEMI is killin me

Your best bet is to do what I did and get a cheap "beater" car and/or a motorcycle. I also have a 40 mile commute to work, and with my 87 Ram only getting 10 mpg, and my wife needing the suburban to haul around the kids, it was my only option. When the weather is above 40 degrees, I ride the bike. Otherwise, I drive my $500 84 Volvo. You can get a bike fairly cheap if you do some shopping, and they get excellent milage (mine gets 45-48 mpg). Or, if you can afford it, take some of that gas money and put it twards a new econobox (toyota tercel, etc.) so you can have something reliable. With the 2005's coming out you should be able to get a great deal on an 04.
