Service Engine HELP!

I was washing the underbelly of my 2000 Xterra to remove mud. I only used a hose pipe and NOT a power washer. Now, the SERVIC ENGINE SOON light is on and the car is running rough. When in drive and stopped the RMP's are just over .500 and in neutral it is at 1000. What could this be? What can I do MYSELF to get this fixed?
Thanks for ANY help.

Re: Service Engine HELP!

First thing: please stop emailing me. I'm glad you feel I'm worth the extra effort, but posting here will get my attention.

As I said in my email back, you need to get the codes to know what's going on. Autozone will do it for free.
I bet you've gotten an O2 sensor wet, been known to happen.

I'll second OffroadX's comment about direct e-mailing questions. We all frequent this board daily for the most part. The idea of a BB is to have posts public so that all can benefit from the disucssion. If things are kept on e-mail it's just one person who gets the info. Plus I'm sure OffroadX is like me and gets tons of e-mail about Xterras. Staying on the BB lets others fill in the answers as well.

So if I have gotten the O2 sensor wet, am I screwed on that? Is there something that I can or need to do to repair the problem?
Sorry about the email. I am new here. I just wanted a response ASAP and you guys looked like you knew what you are talking about.

SES Light

My Xterra is running fine now, however the Service Engine Soon light is still on. Do I still need the codes pulled, or what should I do?

I appreciate the help.

Yes, get the codes read so you at least know what is triggering it.
