turn signal causes smoke to come out of steering wheel ????????? help

I have a 93 pontiac grand prix and for some odd reason my turn signals aren't working unless i hold them to work. Fuses are good and bulbs are good but sometimes when I hold the signal smoke starts coming out of the steering column and smells like burnt plastic......dunno whats causing it maybe wire problem?

Re: turn signal smoking

I haven't had it in the shop yet unfortanetly because my work schedule doesn't allow me to make it on time to get it looked at. I have been told its something with the wires. It doesn't smoke a whole lot just sometimes a little stream of smoke comes out when I put my signal on but doesn't do it all the time so I dunno still have to get it fixed but its strange

sometimes it's just the grease burning off. They lubricate the switches and contacts with this thick yellow like grease and sometimes it gets on the metal contacts and smokes off.

Re: turn signal causes smoke to come out of steering wheel ????????? help

You Should Get The Switch replaced - its not too expensive -the turn signal rocker switch that the allows you to lock the turn signal level when you turn or to hold it up or down when changing lanes - might be worn - shorting out, or it could just be faulty - just go to the parts store an pick one up then take the screws out of the bottem of the the steering column an disconnect the old one an replace it- they are not hard to do . also its could just be the cancel spring in the turnsignal - it might be catching an holding the switch on an shorting out -
Good Luck Hope Ya Get It Fixed
P.S. Take apart the steering column before you go to the store an check whats up down there.
