Cylinder #2 Misfire
Hey guys. My CEL lit up on my 00 LS V8 a few weeks back. I have a friend at a dealership that hooked it up to the computer for me and it gave him a cylinder #2 misfire. I have about 75K on my LS right now. I am hoping that it is just a plug that needs replaced. I have not been driving it for a couple weeks now. I just have not had the time to do any fixes. Does anyone have any helpful information that might make my journy changing these plugs any easier? I have yet to come across a manual for my car yet, and finding information on how to do it has been a pain! Also, let me know if there might be any other possible problems instead of the plugs if you know of any! Be gentle! loL!

I hade a 2000 LS,w/86000 on it. I had the same problem. It was the coilpack, I had to replace 3 of them. I think they were $60 or 70 a piece.

Yea, we got to the root of the problem. I took the car to my gf's dad's house. They work on their racecar there. We took the passenger side covers off and took off the #2 coil and sure enough, there was a hell of a lot of oil on it. I wiped it up as much as I could and turned the engine a few times so as to blow out as much oil as we could. It fixed the problem for the most part, however it still bups a bit. Atleast it is running on all 8 now. I am going to try some engine restore to fix the leak. if that does not work, where to then? replace the head gasket? or is that the part that is leaking?

Re: Cylinder #2 Misfire
NO, NO, NO!!! Don't use any of the crap in your engine! The head is not leaking and if it was, Engine Restore would only hide the problem leading a worse failure in the future. The valve cover gaskets are leaking. That's it. Every older 3.9 V8 has this problem. You can change them yourself for than $150 or let the dealership do it for around $300. Change the plugs while you're in there.

whew! got this post just in time. so thats a big old negative on the engine restore then! other than chilton's is there a place on the net where i can get some help getting to the valve cover gaskets? how much more needs to be taken off the engine to get to them? i am going to go get new plugs today. any recommendations? after looking at the plugs, they looked odd to me. i have never seen point-tipped plugs before! are they like that originally? or just because they are getting worn? also, if the passenger side is leaking (which it is) what are the odds of the driver side as well? might as well do it all at once? and should i notice any gains from doing this? sorry for all the q's but i have never worked on an engine like this. im used to chevy 350's!! lol
thanks! |

Re: Cylinder #2 Misfire
Not sure about the plugs. I use the OEM Motorcraft, but many people in the racing community swear by Champion. The expensive double, triple, and quad tipped ones are a waste from everything I've heard (from people who've actually used them).
Yes, I would do both sides at once. The original gasket material was faulty and eventually both will fail. The kit to replace the cover gaskets and coil o-rings are available from your local Lincoln dealership. They should know all about it. As far as a How-To, I'd strongly suggest getting one of those Shop manuals on CD that you can buy on eBay for $10. GREAT investment if you work on your own car. I've got one and use all the time. I'm rebuilding the rear end of mine now and have a printout from the CD on my work bench. FWIW, the diff is NOT bad or broken. I'm changing the ratio and adding a Torsen unit.

cyl misfire
I have a 2000 ls sport v8 and had same issue with cyl 4 got the code on scanner then clrd codes but chk eng light came back on. I then got a coil pack from dealer and installed but still same hesitating just a little less, I then had dealer change fuel filter but still had problem. Replaced all plugs with Bosch platinum 2, now car is back and very strong, same as new I'll say.
