Lsd

Does anybody know if the limited slip actually works.

I have a 2001 X with LSD. I have done alot of wheeling in the snow lately. When I lose traction in the rear, I look out to see if the power is tranfered from the slipping wheel to the other side. I have yet to see this happen. Usually one wheel is still while the other spins out. This doesn't seem right to me. I know limited slip is not like exactly like lockers, but Shouldn't there be some power transfered from the slipping wheel? I am begining to wonder if my truck is really equipped with LSD.

Check the diff for an orange LSD Oil Only sticker. Someone once received an Xterra badged as having a limited slip, but it was not installed.

Do you have the Sport, Power and Utility packages (XE) or an SE ?

The LSD on the Xterra is known to run a little loose. Most LSDs won't transfer more than a small percentage of the torque to the wheel with traction, so you won't see a lot of action.

Test it from a dead stop, on flat snowy ground. If you have one wheel on ice, and one wheel on pavement, the ice tire will spin, because the other side offers too much traction. The LSD is most "visible" when both tires are on a similar surface, and the weight on each tire is equal.

Another trick that works on most vehicles but works with limited success since the Nissan LSD sucks is to engage the parking brake just enough to bind the rear end up a little. Usually that will force the LSD to semi-work. The Nissan LSD is not a good quality LSD so your grab will be minimal. It is better than open, but not by much. If you don't see the sticker XOC mentioned or you see but still wonder, jack both rear tires up at the same time on jack stands. Once up in there try to turn one wheel and watch the other wheel. If the opposite wheel turns the same direction, you have LSD. If they turn opposite directions you have an open diff.
