Question Pontiac Remote entry questions

We just bought a 2001 Grand-Am SE (4cylindred). I think we got a good deal for 6999 with 14K miles...... Bought at a local car lot in South Florida.

-- We want to get the remote for the keyless entry but it doesnt exactly seem as easy as I was led to beleive. Of course the dealership could easily put a hole in my depleated wallet.....

It seems that there is an internal and external system that was used in these vehicles. (under the dash or in the trunk?) How can I tell which I have? I didnt see anything in the trunk..... There's lots a crap under the dash

FLATRATER gave some valuable information in the grand-am forum:

2001 to 2004 GRAND AMS

Need a GM scanner to program!

Will I be able to program with Snap-on scanner equipment or is this some propreitary dealership stuff so I get held by the ankles out the window.....

Then, FCC ID: L2C0005T for the under the dash -OR- FCC (iud): KOBLEAR1XT for the trunk model.... Is this correct info for the remote that I need?

I wish I could just buy this thing at Wallmart and program it by simultanisly holding the horn, the volume on the radio and flashing the glovebox light with my big toe.......

Your wisdom and guidance would be greatly appreciated,
Kurt

Re: Pontiac Remote entry questions

Should I just go to the dealer and pay a hundred and some dollars?

Hope my research will help you a little. I just purchased a 2001 Alero and figured it had keyless entry, but got NO info whatsoever on the car, as it is a salvage title that I will rebuild. Called the parts dept of the local dealer and they ran the VIN and said yes, I have RKE. But, there were 2 types that year. One type was built in to the main computer under the dash. The other has a separate receiver from the main computer. I asked where it was and he read what his computer said, it is on top of the rear shelf behind the back seat. This may be different than a GA but I bet not. So it IS in the trunk, kind of, but you won't see it from the trunk. You have to remove the felt covered panel under the back glass. This is where I found mine. From the numbers on it, I was able to determine which remote I needed and bought it on eBay for $10 including shipping. Now the bad news, I have traveled all over the internet and cannot find anyone who says it can be programmed other than with a GM Tech I or II scanner. Now you and I can buy this little box, but it costs a little more than I want to spend (I forget how much, but several hundred). So I will now go to dealer and pay $20-$30 to have it programmed.
