i need some help ASAP
unlike the guy who used a similar topic, and only needed info on alteeza lights, i really do need some help asap. i was driving today when my ABS and BRAKE light came on. About the same time i noticed these came on, i noticed my car would not shift. Well i was on my way to work, just to get my check, so i shut the car off and went in for a few min. When i came back out, the car started just fine. However when i went to put it into gear, the safety switch (where you have to press the brake to shift), would not work, like i cannot put the car in gear. However i took it apart while there, and manually flipped the piece up that locks, just so i could get it home. However my car still does not shift, it feels as if its stuck in 3rd. Like i can shift from reverse to drive, but when its in drive, it feels like its in like 3rd gear. Its really doggy when i accelerate, and once again it will not shift. I havent really looked deeply into anything yet, i had to borrow my dads car for now. But i need to get this fixed asap. im gunna look into it tommorow. but i need someplace to start. If anybody can help i would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Justin

Re: i need some help ASAP
ok if it feal's slow just drop the shifter all the way down to low and if it still feal's slow then i dont know what to tell you but remmember to shift up when the engine get's to a high rpm just use it like a standard. But dont to it alot or you will burn up your tranny.

Re: i need some help ASAP
Ive tried that, still no difference, after looking it over today, i checked the fuses, and found one labeled ERLS was blown, i replaced it, and then got in my car, and the safety feature worked just fine (brake pressing to shift into gear). However i put the car back into park, and then it wouldnt shift out. i went and looked at the fuse again, and its blown. this leads me to believe that theres a short someplace. But im not sure which wires to trace because im not sure what the ERLS fuse is for.

Re: i need some help ASAP
I checked around the web, and found that the ERLS fuse is supposed to be responsible for the egr, cannister purge valve, ac compressor, abs and park lock solenoid among a few other things...does this mean i have to trace the wires for all of these? I also read that someone disengeged the TCC selenoid, and this solved the problem. I guess im gunna go out and try to trace the wires, and the disengage the selenoid. If anyone has any other usefull information please let me know.

Re: i need some help ASAP
We did have the same problem on our 1994 Pontiac Grand Am when we applied the brakes hard to avoid collision and have turn the wheels to the right hard while braking and then the brake & abs lights came on.
Turned the car OFF and turn it back on but the brake & abs lights is still ON. We drove the car back home with the brake & abs lights still ON but we still have good braking. After arriving home, I disconnected the battery, disconnected the ABS 3 connectors and master cylinder sensor wire and left disconnected for a couple of minutes and then reconnected them back and when I started the vehicle, the abs & and brake lights are still ON. The following morning, I started the car and the brake & abs lights are NOT showing up anymore. I though maybe it just needed to let the ABS system cool down. Driven the car for 1 week and so far so good the brake & abs lights are NOT showing up. I went and checked the ABS sensors on each wheel and they are covered with magnetic particles and probably blocking the sensors. I cleaned the ABS sensors good and you might want to clean your ABS sensors and use a powerful magnet to remove the magnetic particles covering the ABS sensor. |

Re: Re: i need some help ASAP
Quote:
The TCC solenoid is suppose to engage the lock the tranny in the last gear when the vehicle is at cruising speed to make it fuel efficient. However, the TCC solenoid is suppose to disenage when you slow down. The problem arises when the TCC solenoid does not disengaged from the last gear and the tranny is stuck at the last gear even though you are slowing down. The result would be the engine would die because the tranny is still at the last gear while the engine rpm has slowed down. When the engine dies and the driver tries to start it, the engine would not start because the tranny is still locked at the last gear. It is like trying to start a manual transmission in the last gear and so the engine would not start. Letting the car cool down allows the TCC solenoid to release the tranny and then you can start the vehicle and cycle repeats again. When people are having problem with the TCC solenoid not releasing then they just unplug the TCC solenoid wire connector. |

Re: i need some help ASAP
Would those problems with the ABS cause the ERLS fuse to blow?

Re: i need some help ASAP
im assuming you dont have a ses light....id have to say your park lock selenoid is popping the fuse and since the erls includes some functions of the auto trans, it isnt allowing for a 4th gear shift....do this...Disconnect the automatic transmission shift lock control switch...Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF. Press the brake pedal and hold.
Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position. if it doesnt move out of park, with the switch still unplugged, Connect a test lamp between the automatic transmission shift lock control signal circuit at the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid and a good ground.... if it lights up youve got a short, if it doesnt replace the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. |

Re: i need some help ASAP
thanks for all your info, but i figured it out, it turned out to be a wire that i overlooked, and was shorted out by the hood somehow. I noticed this cuz i had my hood up, a brand new fuse in the slot, and i had the car running for at least 5 min, and nothing happened, then i shut the hood, and as soon as it shut the fuse blew. So i looked at all the upper wires, and found one that was getting pinched somehow. So yea that solved the problem. But i appreciate everyones info.
