My dad and I are re-building his 68 firebird and he has not decided whoch he wants to use, a blower or nitrous. I was just wondering some other peoples thoughts on the subject.

I don't think both would work, don't they have completly different compression ratios??

No, no, at the moment its a chevy 350, we plan to make it into a 383 stroker. And no, I was not kidding, I had heard they were different compresion ratios from a guy I work with who i gave the same question. I'm still fairly new to this, considering i'm only 17!!!!

Re: blower or Nitrous?
I built my first V8 when I was 16 years old. You should try it, you'd love it.
Get that Chevy engine out of there and put a Pontiac engine in! First things first! Any GM 383 is a stroker anyway. Well, I think the guy you work with either knows what he's talking about and you misinterpreted it, or he's a dumbass and doesn't know what's going on. I don't see how "they are different compression ratios" means anything here. You can supercharge a 350 and run it on nitrous and it will be a demonic little engine. If you have the time, money, and knowhow, and above all a true desire to do this, you will learn how to do it, and then do it. Lots of guys just talk about doing this but then find out how much is involved and get scared and whatever... You can do basically anything you want to this motor, there are pretty much no limitations.

Well we are going to make it into a 383 for sure. and you say its possible to put on a blower and still have nitrous at the same time? We are aiming for the 500 - 600 HP range. Any other input, tips or ideas would be nice.

Re: blower or Nitrous?
I don't know anyone with a blower that doesn't also have nitrous, they go together like milk and cookies.
You can easily make that much power with a blower and nitrous. I'm not going to sit up and tell you exactly how to do it, as I've only talked to guys with setups like this. I don't own anything like this, I'd probably kill myself with it. Someone else might have something to say about this...

Re: blower or Nitrous?
It depends on what you want to do with it.
If it has a Chevy already, work with the chevy engine. You obviously don't care about whether its original or not, and Chevys are cheaper to build. I think a 383 would be really nice in there. Build a 383 with no blower or nitrous and see how you like it. It's easy to add notrous later, but an engine must be built for a blower. You are right on the compression ratio. Blower engines must be built with low compression pistons. As soon as you USE a blower or nitrous, you WILL start to break other components, such as the trans and rear end. Also, those first gen CamBirds were not the most rigid platforms. You would have to modify the structure so the extra power won't twist the structure. Also, that extra power will give the leaf spring rear end fits anyways, without modification. |
