Question Fuel Gauge

Can someone explain to me why the fuel gauge in my 96 metro decdides to "race" to the empty line when ther appears to be a half tank of gas left? According to the gauge I'll go about 150 miles on a half tank but then the last half will only get 50 miles. Then when I fill up the tank will only take about 5.5 gallons.

Is this a problem with the gauge or the sensor in the fuel tank?

Is there a realistic fix for this problem or should I just accecpt it as a cost for a low cost car?

Sounds like a faulty sending unit in the gas tank, or your float rod might be bent. Either way, it requires the gas tank to be dropped. BIG pain in the a$$. I personally would leave it alone, unless it decides to stop working. Or grab a junkyard gas tank with the fuel pump and everything installed already.
