Questions about '90 Teg
I have a 90 teg that I don't know much about. Can anyone tell me what motor is in an LS? it is a 5 speed hatchback which I bought for my wife. (She was killing the clutch in my NSX so I bought her THIS car). It has 135,000 miles and the records show that the timing belt has been changed @ 90k Do I have anything else that I have to worry about as far as regular maintanance? ( I expect that the water pump was done at the same time ) Thanks for your input.

Re: Questions about '90 Teg
i also have a 90 integrals. its the b18. its a 1.8. never ever let it overheat even a little... its real bad for blown head gaskets. as far as maintanance... my motor had 250,000 miles on it before i rebuilt it and i never had any major mechanical problems, other that the blown head gasket which was my own fault. just regular oil changes will keep it running forever. just make sure you keep up with that timing belt because it is not a non-interference motor. if you want any suggestions on how to build, or what yeilds the most horsepower for that engine, just let me know.. i got it all.

B18A1, weaker than 92-93 ls which has 140hp and 126 lb/ft of torque. Yours is rated 130 hp @ 6000 rpm and 121 lb/ft @ 5000 rpm.

Re: Questions about '90 Teg
okay, take your car and performe a tune-up on it with a new clutch (for the misses), plugs, plug wires, distrib cap w/ rotor, motor oil, tranny fluid, cam seal, check your brakes and suspention. when you doo all of this, if you want to upgrade, now would be a great time, or you could put a new motor in it since you have the kind of cash you have (NSX), ya know...

don't forget the fuel filter, everyone seems to never write this down. ethier they don't know about it, or they forget to mention it.

Re: Questions about '90 Teg
yea, thanks tran. drill out the back side before installlation though. The outlet is .84 the size of the inlet, this will free up a couple horses across the board.

is the B18 from a 92 integra an interference engine? stated above, someone mentioned that it's a NON-interference engine and warned about the timing belt. if it was a non-int motor, the timing belt wouldnt be an issue because the pistons would never come in contact with the valves if the belt snaped, so which is it? i'm looking to purchase an integra and the timing belt blew, so i'm wondering if it needs a new head (valves) to make it run again.
thanks in advance, Arty |

90-93 tegs have interference engines.
I have a 91 LS teg and my timing belt blew on the highway doing 85. The mechanic quoted me $2800 to fix the car saying that he'd have to remove the head and machine the parts. I spoke to some Acura mechanics and they said that 1 out of 10 luck out when their timing belts break. I took a chance and replaced the belt without removing the head. The car started up fine and is still running. It cost me $800 to replace all the belts and starter (different issue). |
