well you can get more mpg out of them now. as oppose to 7 mpg from a ss impala.
i think that comes into consideration these days.

Re: Is america doing any better in the past 25+years?
Yeah I believe American cars have gotten a lot better. The cars today are more complete performance vehicles and better vehicles in all today in every way, except for styling.

Are you sure, I mean I keep hearing about that mid 12s but I never saw in a magazine anyone making that time ever. I know weather and magazine drivers matter a lot but never??? Even HOT ROD magazine still manages only very high 12s:http://www.hotrod.com/roadtests/79878/index1.html Here even Justin Bell which pulled out some of the best times out of all these cars could not do it:

Re: Is america doing any better in the past 25+years?
I'd be willing, maybe, to except 7MPG from supercar (Ford GT) that I would drive a limited amount of time, but a daily driver only getting 7MPG is brutal especially with gas prices these days.

Re: Is america doing any better in the past 25+years?
...but that 7mpg in conjunction with the smallish fuel tanks in the ford gt means that you have to refuel every 75-80 miles.....
that's what makes it slightly rediculous. |

I think a lot of those older cars times were with slicks, also I dont see how a stock 1973 Pontiac trans am could run a 13.6, I thought emission regulations were enlisted in 1972 and nothing had much horsepower from 1972 to the mid 80s when technology had time to catch up to the regulations.

Now, one thing I do find odd about them is the door roof..(noted from the Top Gear Vid that features the Ford GT). lol in the late 80's(not sure what year) pontiac had the firebird aniversary model that had a turbo v6(same one as in the gnx?) that did high 13's or low 14's. IIRC *just giving the 80's one more car to note since there where so few.. :P |

Well, youngVR4, yes the 427 Cammies weren't good handling machines. The Berger, Yenko, Baldwin Motion, and Dana cars used the iron block 427 which put a ton of weight over the front axle making for lots of understeer. The COPO cars were factory built drag cars, and while their all aluminum 427's were light, the setup wasn't nearly as road course friendly as the 302 powered Z28 Camaros.
Not to mention have you ever driven a car with 4inch wide bias ply tires?
