Angry 84 civic smoking

Hey... Bought an '84 civic for son's starter car. Car was in decent shape, but had a ton of miles and previous ( original) owner took head off to track down cyl. no. 3 oil-fouling problem. He lost interest ( and cyl. head! ) and put for sale sign on it. I just dropped in a wrecking yard motor, and seems to run fine, but it smokes pretty good after warm-up... not immediatly after start-up, which would lead me to valve seals/guides, but only after engine is warm... it's definitely oil smoke (blue), and only faint @ idle. But when you stab the gas, it smokes really good! Can you say "Quick, Batman, hit the smoke-screen button"?!?! Any thoughts on where to start looking? Have comp. tester, vacuum tester, etc. Just not sure where to look.

Thanks!

Re: 84 civic smoking

if it smokes like a B.B.Q that you forgot to turn over the chiken drum sticks.......... ......then it could be oil blowing past the pistons oil compreshion rings(or rings......)you have to drive it for a while and check the oil out from time to time....if its missing oil...(minimum or exagerated amount....)then it just night be that.....try to ask seņor wagon(cvcc wagon..)he post alot in different threds helping those in need...

(oh nooooo!!my banana!!!!)

Re: 84 civic smoking

87civicfranky has it bang on, it's the rings. (and you're right about the valve guides/seals, that would only smoke at start-up) it will need a rebuild on the bottom end which will not come cheep. do you still have the original bottom end of the first engine. if it's still good you can swap your new head onto that bottom end.

Re: 84 civic smoking

while the subjuct is up I was wondering if anybody knows where I can get bottom end rebuild kits for cheep. Also do hondas genrally have to be bored out during rebuild or do the rings just go bad.

Re: 84 civic smoking

well from what i have seen it is pretty uncommon to bore out cylinders when replacing rings (it's often done to get more volume but there isn't much you can bore out) usually just a honing will do the job but it does depend on the condition of the block

Ya I need to get a dail bore gauge so when the engine comes apart I'll know what to do. I try not to cut corners on that kinda of stuff.

Re: 84 civic smoking

i did 6 months ago, in another 6 months or so i will have a second gen 1.5 that needs new front and rear seals, other than that it runs fine w/o any smoke. but i wouldn't really recommend it tho because it's got over 253 000 miles in an untouched bottom end
