Angry bogging out

i have a 1990 mits. galant. POS. im not sure if this is the correct term but this mornig for the first time my car started bogging out. almost like there wasn't enough gas. i was going to check the spark plugs but a special sprak plug 5/8 ratchet didn't work and i cant figure out the size. so first off whats the size for the spark plug and second what are some possible problems. i have an exaust leak which may contribute, my air filter is FILTHY. i don't see or smell a gas leak. also it might be a low idle, but why would that happen all of a sudden? what is the correct idle for this car? please respond ASAP. thanks. you can instant message me on AIM- skrubbyd.

Yeah, replace the air filter first of all and see if that helps anything (probably not).

I can't really tell exactly what your problem is without more details, but you may possibly need a new fuel filter or fuel pump. But this is if it is bogging down or cutting out all the time when it's running, no matter if it's idling, revving in neutral, accelerating, etc.

If it's only happening while accelerating, and you can't duplicate the problem in neutral, and I'm sorry to inform you that you have a transmission problem. My mom had a 1995 Galant 4cyl auto that did the same exact thing. Try seeing if you can duplicate the symptoms in neutral before drawing any conclusions, though. If it accelerates smoothly throughout the powerband in neutral (wait until the engine is fully warm before trying this to get accurate results), but trying to accelerate while in Drive brings about the problem, then you definitely have a tranny problem.

Good luck and keep us posted for further help.

I have a 1997 Galant and I seem to be having the same problem. Fortunately my husband is going through a Service Technician Technical school. Well we got a hook up and read the error codes from the computer. It said the IAC (Idle Air Control) was tampered with? Well of course nobody goes under the hood or our car and for a few years now my husband is the only person to do services on our car. One problem is if you cleaned out your throttle body and carbon went into the ventilation holes it can damage your IAC motor. As for us it's been about 2 going on 3 weeks now a new motor is $260. We won't know if this is the exact problem until we use another scan tool, adjust the IAC, and see if the same error code pops back up.

So for now, did you find out any more on your problem?
