Read This If Getting Car Painted
i got my car painted at earl scheib.....i have one thing to say to you all...never get your car painted at earl scheib!.
i picked it up and the first thing i noticed was that the color was waaay different than the sample they gave me. the sample matched my car perfectly which is a light silverish blue but the car i picked up was bright baby blue. then i noticed that the side trim that runs down the middle of both sides of your car had been shaved off and painted, but only most of it, there are about 3 8-10 inch peices of it that are just sanded where it used to be! the manager said that they couldnt get it all the way sanded down and that if i got the black trim he would install it for me. the worst thing by far was when i looked at my windows. they look like they had a belt sander took to them!...both the passenger and driver windows as well as the 1/4 window in back are BADLY sanded. i brought the manager outside and showed them to him and he said"i've told them about this before, call me on monday and i'll see what i can do"...so i'm thinking this has happened enough times that you've had to talk to them before? then i noticed how much overspray there was. i'm talking at least a 1/2 inch on damn near every peice of trim i have on the car. then i noticed that there is 3 places on the car where there is some major paint dripping. now i'm not talking about a few drips, i'm talking about a 6 inch row of them and the one on the back is about 4 by 5 inches of paint "chunk". there's also a scuff in the fender too. if any of you are thinking "you got a cheap paint job, what did you expect" then yes, i did get a "cheap" paintjob but it was also there best paintjob and when buying a cheap paintjob i expect to get a car back that looks like a car that was painted with cheap paint (which it is, and does) and maybe the couple little things, like an odd drip or a little overspray. what i dont expect is to get a car back thats ten times worse than when i gave it to them. in the end i dont like paying someone to **** my car up!. i work in a upscale restaurant as a line cook and if i send someone out soemthing and they dont like it then we comp them free drinks and dessert and make them a new meal, why shouldnt it be the same for my car?. anyway thanks for reading this as i know it's my problem and some of you wont care but i wanted to post it for anyone wanting to get there car painted so they could learn from my mistake. i'm calling the manager on monday about my glass which he WILL replace, and i'm going to tell him what i told you guys and ask for a refund and if he doesnt give it to me then i'm calling the district manager of earl schieb in the bay are and then the better buisness beurou(sp?)

Re: Read This If Getting Car Painted
I dont care about the price of the paint but the labor and who puts it on is something i care about. What would a nice and i mean show room nice paint job cost? 2g? How many layers would you do?

a show room nice paintjob would be at least like 4-5 grand.....and i've been haggeling with the guy at the paintshop and he's now agreed to fix my windows and repaint my car, so i'm gonna sand the whole thing to bare metal and have him repaint it. go to the 240sx.org forums to check out the whole story

i wouldnt be turned off by earl scheib if i were you guys, i've heard alot of good storys of people getting there cars done there, you just have to make sure your taking to the RIGHT earl scheib because the one i took it to was run by some shady people.

Well the Earl Scheib around me (Gardena) is the worst paint experience I have ever seen. My friend got their "best" paint job for 500$ and it came out like total dogshit. Just normal Black color, nothing difficult at all...there was overspray everywhere, HUGE chunks of shit underneath the paint, terrible orange peel, and dust EVERYWHERE underneath the paint...I could have done better with a couple rattle-cans. He eventually had it repainted FOUR times because he complained to the company with his dad. They had their "best painter" do his car finally and it still looks kinda shitty. Good luck.

See when I went to maaco and got a quote, they do paint jobs for as high as $1500. I wonder if I spent that much if I would still have all these problems. Paint sucks.

Re: Read This If Getting Car Painted
earl scheib and maaco are both chains, but they are driven by independently owned shops. every one is different and based by that individual shop.
ive seen maaco jobs, and earl shieb jobs (actually i have had cars painted at both). maaco has better paint imo, but they don't prep the car at all and it starts peeling off within 2 weeks. earl scheib preps the car and you get a much longer lasting paint job, but sometimes they have runs or the paint quality/shine isn't all there. your best bet is to take your car to maaco for body work - $100, then take it to earl schieb to get it prepped/sealed (just ask for a "flat black" paint job ) - $200, then take it back to maaco for the paint job - $250. takes a little run around but you'll have one decent ass paint job for around $500.
