Tools - pt. 2

Well I think I've figured out that Craftsman makes the tools that suit me the best...now it's time to figure out which ones I need to buy and which ones are optional.

I've got a full set of metric and SAE sockets, combination wrenches and allen wrenches...screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, chisels and punches, electrical equip.

Is there anything else anyone can think of that I can't work on my truck without? (besides lifting equip.)

Also, what types of impact sockets are essential? I'm working on building a set now to get stuck bolts out but I'm not sure what I need. All I have so far is a 12 piece SAE set from 3/8 to 17/16. Next on the list is a Metric set from 3/8 to 17/16.

Are deep versions of all these necessary or can I just rely on an extension bar and regular sockets for getting bolts out?

Deep wells are sometimes a necessity....I use them more often than a regular socket. Also you will want a good set of torx wrenchs or drivers. Also get a good torque wrench....get the clicker type, not the needle type.

Feeler Gauges
1/4 Drive Set - I find this useful for working on the dash, also use it to remove dist cap, rebuilding alts, etc
A good deadblow hammer
Brass Punch (for U-joints)
Fuel Line Quick Disconnects
Automotive Stethescope
A good file set
Tap and Die Sets (SAE and Metric)
Gear Puller Set
Flare Nut Wrenches

I am sure I will think of more.

1 Digitial Volt Ohm Meter - DVOM for testing sensors, wiring, switches, relays etc...

Thanks everyone for the help. Know that I look at it, I guess I forgot to list a few tools I have like a multimeter and torx set. But now I have a new list to start chipping away at.


Going back to the impact sockets for a second, since I am building a set piece by piece and can only buy one set at a time, would it be better to get all 1/2" drive? I don't have the $$ right now to get both 3/8 and 1/2, so I started with 1/2". Is there anything the 3/8 can do that the 1/2 can't?

I would say the 1/2 is a good idea, unless its impact sockets. Then you would obvioulsy get the size according to that.

Watch out for this on metric impact socket sets,the 15mm and 18mm are missing and you have to buy them sepratly if you have to.That really ticks me off when they leave out 15mm and 18mm.The most common metric sizes are 10mm,13mm,15mm and 18mm.If you are going to buy any impact wrenches,buy Ingersoll Rand.You cannot kill them, they run forever and they are the best ones on the market.Get the 3/8'' drive impact sockets too

Test light is also a really good tool to have.
