Unhappy Shudder at Hwy speed, NOT unbalanced tire

I've developed a shudder at 60 or so that is definitely not an unbalanced tire although it feels similar. I've had the wheels balanced to .25 gram and the alignment is just completely redone. Has a slight drift to the right that the tech said he doesn't understand why and has done it's best to get rid of.

The front steering damper isn't the problem either since the symptoms would be different.

Any ideas?

I've got a similar situation. I have new tires and I rebuilt the front end and had it aligned and still have the "shakes". I think it's in the drive train somewhere, either front or rear drive shaft. All the u-joints have been replaced (I've been busy working on the ol' Jeep) but that didn't cure it. I guess the drive lines were "worked on" by someone before I bought the Jeep and got the drive lines out of phase or maybe there is a slight bend in the rear shaft. It's been a shaker ever since I bought it.

A good drive line service outfit could figure it out. I think there is a Spicer service center in our area. I'm giving them the first shot.

Hope you get yours figured out.

have you lifted your jeep above 3 inches? If so, your drive line may be out of parrallel. Remember, once lifted, all U joints should be running in parrallel to the ground. If not, you may need to add shims beneath your rear leafs to bring things back in line.

You may also want to check your wheel bearings. IF YOU HAVE REPLACED YOUR U-JOINTS. Best way to check is to lift the beast off the ground and grab hold of the tires and see what type of play you have in them.

Automatic or standard? If it's an automatic, you could very well have internal tranny issues. This will cause the exact thing you are describing. I would take it to a reputible transmission shop and have them test drive it and take a quick look.

My jeep did a similar thing at 55mph. It was caused by a warped brake rotor. Might want to check that out.
