Engine bearings

I drive a 91 g20 auto. It seems that whenever there is a gear change, my engine slams into my frame causing a great deal of jolt to me and my passengers. I took it to a mechanic, and he told me that it was the engine bearings. I have established that its not my tranny, but it could be my shocks as well. I would just like to inquire if anyone knows where to get some engine bearings for my car.

Engine bearings? Which ones? Sounds like it may be engine mounts, my car did the same(manual though) when the engine was under load it was fine, lift the right foot and a clunk or series of clunks followed! I though drivetrain but was engine mounts. They are easy to check, can do visually, make sure they are not squashed looking! Front left( looking towards car, under bonnet), botom-middle of engine to chasis rail and one near tranny I think....from memory

On the Auto there are three mounts. One is on the upper pass side, the engine front mount. The next is the trans mount (which may have gone) in your case...this is on the bottom drivers side basically almost in the middle of the engine compartment. Then in the rear there is a back engine mount...this one from my experiences never was bad.

Also, what may be happening is that your trans may be going. The trans that hooked up to the G has some problems where material was getting chunked off from the insides and torque converter. There are screens (filters) inside the trans that catch this material. Becuase there is material blocking, you may not be getting the correct pressure to the trans and therefore it is creating a harsh shift.

Besides physically checking the eng mounts, I would also try and rev the engine and see how much it moves around. If you hear it bang against the stops, you're in need for new mounts...actaully if you have never changed your mounts before and you have a 91 you should probably do it anyways.

Well...you need to determine what you want to get first...more impotantly, what needs to be fixed.

Ok well changing them out yourself is kind of a tough process, as you need to kind of knowing what you are doing. So you would need experience, tools, a FSM and a helper.

I would say take it to a good nissan/infiniti dealer and have them do it. They may charge alot, yes but they do warranty the work and the parts and its the best way to go if you dont have all of the above resources.

Ahh phooy. You'll never learn anything that way. The best way to learn about something is to break it. The more expensive it is the better you learn.

LOL! That's a good way to look at things! I'm glad i did most of my "learning" on my cheap old Mustang. Lots of parts, cheaply available.
