Hi I know if the water pump is leaking on the out side it bad. I had the radiator cap off and I did not see any flow in the radiator just up and down form the thermostat opening up when the engine was running (15 mins) does that mean the water pump is bad ?

Re: How to tell if a water pump is bad
A 1970 Grand prix Sj 455 4 barrel in it 18500 miles on the motor the water pump is 5 years old trying to figure out why its smokeing (white smoke) the heads are good , the gasket are good ,the coolant level and oil level are good in it

OK, first thing I would do is Pressurize the radiator to about 20lbs. Wait 20 mins to 30 mins, Check that the pressure did not drop. Check ALL hose connections, Look around the Waterpump for Anti-Freeze or Wetness, Check the headgasket areas.
Was the Coolong system ever Backflushed? if How many miles ago? When was the last time a Waterpump Lube was added to the Coolant? If you don't a a pressure gauge, you can buy one from Pep Boys that isn't to much $$$.
