Tune up help!

My friend bought an 81 tubbed camaro with a 454ci, 750cfm dbl pumper, 3spd auto with ratchet shifter, 4.55 differential. That is all he knows about the car and he is trying to tune it (1/4 mile time was 14.24 sec shifting @6000 rpm at elevation of 4000 feet). My stock C5 vette with 350ci and 2.73 gears runs the same! Can someone please help with a little tune up info...we are mechanically challanged...lol (i.e. timing, jet size and anything else that would help make this thing go faster)

Re: Tune up help!

it runs on racing gas 125 octane, we made 5 passes, new 3" driveshaft, spooled rearend and new axles, no exhaust just straight headers.

Re: Tune up help!

dont think it is running hot but we will check, he does not know what kind of cam, lifters, pistons he has. Timing right now is advanced 28 degrees, tomorrow we will check plugs, compression, ignition. Thanks!!

Re: Tune up help!

is it a built 454 or a stocker from a truck or something that was thrown in just to help sell the car?

Re: Tune up help!

The car was built in W.V. bought at auction and brought to Montana so we do not know much about it...of note it came with a distributor that was a magneto (weird) the was recently changed to a standard distributor and the carb was a 850cfm dbl pumper and now changed to a 750 we were also told it was built for nitrous but none was installed.

Re: Tune up help!

sounds like a slipping converter, if its running smooth, sounds good, but its an auto, could be shitty converter, or a worn out one. causing massive slippage and slow times.

Re: Tune up help!

Thanks for all the help, we wound up doing compression checks and zero lbs on cyclinder 8...we tore the heads off and thought we would be lucky, found a bent exhaust valve there but what makes it worse the #6 cylinder wall was scored badly (deeper then 30 thousandths) and a small part of the piston was actually melted!!! So time for a big block crate motor and $7000.00 plus :-(
Oh well thats racing. Again thanks for the info.
