I've modified my car a little bit and I'm wondering if I need to tell my insurance company about it? If I do will I have to pay more? If I don't and my car gets stolen do I not get compensated for my mods? Any insight into this is appreciated.

you can tell them, they won't care.....insurance will cover up to $1000 in modifications with your regular insurance...otherwise you can purchase additional coverage...I have $4000 additional coverage and it only costs $40 every 6 months

i'm an insurance broker up in b.c. canada. I know they don't care, as long as you know the limitations. In b.c., they probide a miximum of $1000 for stereo equipment, and $5000 for other optionoal equipment, not installed by the factory. Stereo equipment excess coverage is $20 for every $100 of extra equipement every year, so this is stupid and no one does that. as for the excess speical equpiemtn (wheels, paint, body kit), it's $1.95 for every $100 over the limit. Now, you don't hvae to buy this, but then let's say your ride gets jacked, $6000 is all they'll give you for your stereo and all other engine, body equipement. Also, one stipulation is it's only covered if the item can only be removed with a tool. that's why cd's aren't covered by your car insurance. I know canada is different from the states, but i hope that helped a bit.

Well...so far the breakdown on my mods is...
Aesthetic: ($319) Engine ($219) Wheels/Suspension ($2131) Stereo ($1867) ------------------------ Total ($3536) And that's not counting the close to a $1000 spent on the stereo install and the labor $$$ to put in the other stuff. Plus most of those items I paid under retail by a bunch. Do you think I should get additional coverage? If I get into a crash, should I say I bought all the stuff retail or am I going to need receipts to prove it all? Also, do they compensate for the money needed to install everything? Will they not cover my stereo because it cost so much? I should probably just call my insurance and ask about this. But before I mention anything to them I want to know what I'm working with.

I'm sure that every insurance company is going to have different stipulations and limitations. I haven't checked into mine extensively but i do know that they will only cover things that are REPLACING a factory part in it's factory position. For instance, an amplifier mounted in the trunk (or anywhere for that matter) would not be covered under any circumstances because my car doesnt come out of the factory with an amp. Keep that in mind, but i'm sure every insurance company is different.
