97 gl compressor bypass

Does anyone know why ford is saying that it's gonna cost 600 bucks to bypass the newly frozen AC compressor. I was always under the impression that most car manufacturers make it rather easy to bypass by putting on a shorter belt that didn't wrap the pulley at all. If anyone has any information on why this job cost so much, if ford is trying to pull my strings, or is there is a legit reason why they have to take the compressor apart and put it back in all just to bypass it? Any input is appreciated.

What foolishness is this? I think they're trying to shag you!

For $600 you can replace the compressor, and your A/C will work again!

The only reason to take the compressor apart is to try and repair it. If it truly froze, I'm wondering why they would bother. Is this being done at a dealer?

Ask 'em about replacing the compressor, and then call a local A/C shop and get a price from them.

Good luck,

Smile A/C Compressor removal

You can have the compressor removed at any NAPA repair shop as I did...Takes three hours of labor...Then replace sepentine belt with shorter belt, available at Autozone!!! My car runs fine w/o A/C.

Re: 97 gl compressor bypass

Who would want a '97 GL without A/C? Was the compressor froze or the clutch? If only the compressor, the clutch should release and the pulley spin freely. Y'ought to look the situation over again.
