Balance shafts?

I was wondering if it was possible to just cut the balance shaft belt and let it ride, instead of tearing the motor apart.

Re: Balance shafts?

I'm only familiar with 1st generation Talon engines, and they have only one balance shaft belt. It is behind the timing belt. 2nd generation Talons are different?

Why would you want to cut the balance shaft belt anyway? I can't believe doing so would offer any advantage at all. Why would the engineers who designed the engine go to the amount of work and expense required if it isn't necessary?

Re: Balance shafts?

actually 1g talons have 2 balance shafts one in the front and the rear which is the shaft for the oil pump. the reason is to get rid of some rotating weight, b-shafts dont do near as much as the flywheel but its supposed to let the engine rev quicker. the only downside is the engine vibrates more. youy only really notice if you have solid motor mounts though.

Re: Balance shafts?

oh btw engineers do all kinds of stupid shit just to make cars quieter, smoother, better emissions, better mileage, etc... most of the stuff gets in the way of power. just wait till you rip into that acura of yours lol. you probably have all kinds of emission shit and you cant do anything about it cuz the computer will throw a fit.

Re: Balance shafts?

What i have been reading states that the balance shaft belts are not usually changed out when the timing belt is replaced. Thusly it wears as time goes on, with the owner under the assumption that the timing belt is fine for another 50k miles. Not the case because if it breaks it can and will snap your timing belt causing you to rebuild the head and possibly the engine. I have a 6bolt on a stand in the garage and was wondering if it would be an issue with leaving the belt off. thanks for the replies

Re: Balance shafts?

the balanace shaft belt and tensioner are supposed to be changed at the same time as the main timing belt and tensioner

Re: Balance shafts?

ok... cut the belt is a no no if you are leaving them in... go to www.magnusmotorsports.com and order a balance shaft removal kit, $50-75 and you can remove them... thats the only right way to do it, why have them in there if your not goin to use them! just extra weight, but cuting the belt and leaving it in there and still having the weight is worthless!

btw... Kevins username is 95_GSXRacer both him and i run a 1st gen 6 bolt in our cars... he knows quite a bit about them and i learned most of my shit from his knowledgable posts!
