Hello all... first post here... let's see how it goes.
Anyway, I have a 2001 pathfinder and have the SES light on. I used my OBD2 reader and got code "P1140". Of course this is a brand specific code and I could not find much about it on the web. I got a hold of the chilton manual and it tells me it is the variable valve timing sensor. Well, I checked that sensor to the moon and it checked out fine. As I have been going through some more internet posts, I think this may not be the correct translation of this code. Has anyone with a pathfinder had this code and fixed the problem? Help please... NC will fail my inspection if any codes are read and i need to have my inspection done in less than a month. Thanks in advance, Charles |

My SES just came on a week ago and I haven't been able to bring it into the service dept. Nissan wants $75 to read the code, does that sound right? How much did your repairs cost? The vehicle runs fine, so I will have it service when I have time. Will it hurt the vehicle?
And can I go to Autozone and they can help me read the code? |

Just got back from Autozone and the code came back as P1456- Fuel Tank Temperature Sensor Malfunction. What is this? and is it damaging?
Thanks, for any info. |

Re: Help !! P1140 OBD2, what is it?
You might want to start a new thread to get more views.
But this is a perfect example of why you shouldn't listen to what Autozone says the code means or how to fix it, they didn't even get the code right. OBDII codes >= P1000 are manufacturer specific meaning that the code might match the generic list or the manufacturer might have a different meaning for that code. Autozone gave you the generic P1456 code description of Fuel Tank Temp Sensor error, but for Nissans the error P1456 is really a EVAP system small leak. You did the right thing when dealing with Autozone, get the numeric code and then post in these forums for more details. Here's a link to a discussion on P1456: http://65.166.200.170/ubbthreads/sho...rue#Post308476 An EVAP small leak won't damage anything. |

Thanks for the link, read all the commons and I have one more qustion. Autozone cleared the code and it hasn't come back on yet, should I drive it til it comes back on or go see the service shop now?
I read that some code might come up if you fill up with the car running and I always fill up with the car running. And right before the SES came on, I changed the oil and washed the engine bay because where I live we have the big seventeen year flying locust. Maybe I got something wet? Don't know I guess I'll wait and see. |

Re: Help !! P1140 OBD2, what is it?
I would hold off before getting it looked at and fill up with the car off from now on. Also make sure you get the cap on good after filling up. If you still have an EVAP problem it should come back on within a week or so of normal driving.

Does anyone know how to test the camshaft sensor?

Re: Re: Help !! P1140 OBD2, what is it?
phamhoc, you might want to invest in a subscription to www.alldata.com if you're going to do much DIY work, it has all the Nissan repair/diag info on all trouble codes, full text TSBs, maintenance etc. Or you can go to nissantechinfo.com and get a 1 day subscription for $19.95 and pretty much download the entire factory service manual if you have a decent connection.
