Sidepanel and dash vinyl recovering
Hey i been wanting to redo my vinyl on my sidepanels to grey and then somehow match my dash with grey. I had the idea to redo my side panel in grey vinyl and wanted to try it myself. I found some pretty cheap vinyl on ebay in different colors, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=26455, and wanted to know if anybody had any ideas on how to put new vinyl on my sidepanels or if anyone knew of any sites that showed how to redo the vinyl. Any help i get is appreciated.

Re: Sidepanel and dash vinyl recovering
Its pretty easy to do but you might have problems getting the vinyl to stretch to the shapes you want though. i used royal blue felt and a strong aerosol Glue and it was just a matter of striping off the old stuff & applying the new but making sure not to leave any air pockets. you might have to take some stuff apart to to make it fit right and tuck in all the edges & so on.............,,,,,,,,,
if thats any help! |

ok, yeh i was mainly wondering what to keep it on there with. Didn't know if there was a special kind of adhesive or what. But that sounds good...as long as it looks like the stock sidepanels.

Re: Sidepanel and dash vinyl recovering
All that vinyl on Ebay will cost more to ship than its worth! Check out your local fabric store or better yet, check with your local upholstery/trim shop. You will need to use a steamer or heat gun in order to mold the vinyl to contours and you will need to use a contact cement to adhere it to your panels. DO NOT use 3M spray cans from the hardware store such as 74, 77 or 90! These glues will release when they are exposed to high heat (car parked outside on a hot day). Use DAP high strenght adhesive or landau top adhesive. You can probably find DAP at a hardware store, if not your local upholstery supplier will have it. You can use a brush to apply this adhesive, but the best way is to use a sprayer and air compressor.
If your panels are still in good condition you can use a vinyl dye to change the color. This is an inexpensive and easier way to change the color. The dye applies like spray paint and you can probably get it from the same upholstery shop or upholstery supplier. The main difference between dying and painting is that the yinyl dye is flexible and will not flake off like paint. |
