hey! help bad torque converter clutch solenoid??

how do i tell,, a friend who works on lumina's told me 9 out of 10 times its the solenoid on my 96 lumina, said he's had alot of them come in with it, they won't shift at all, well i took it out, quite a bit of tranny fluid came out of it, and the little end thats suppose to go in and out hard'ly moves, could someone help me on this
